Sanford, Maine – By Brendan Bowlin. The Nighthawks get their redemption on the Mainers and take a dominating 11-1 victory on the road. Anthony Greco’s 5 RBIs and the pitching staff were the factors tonight as the Nighthawks bounce back at the home of the Mainers.
The Nighthawks struck first in the top of the second inning. Ryan Preisano started with a leadoff and battled for a six-pitch walk, but the main event that followed was a two-run homer from Anthony Greco on just the second pitch he saw. Greco’s 357-foot home run was the second Nighthawks home run of the season since Cole Fellows put one over the fence at Keene. Anthony Brotz would also reach base with a single but was picked off. The Nighthawks would take the early 2-0 lead.
The top of the third was another great offensive inning that brought in just one more run as Monile would walk with one out, get to second on a passed ball, and be moved another 90 feet thanks to a Jack Spanier single. Cole Fellows used his power to put a deep fly into left field that scored Monile with just 2 batters.
Sanford would eventually answer back in the bottom of the fourth; they needed three batters. Luke Jenkins would get on with a leadoff walk, and Kyle Douin would follow that up with a single to put two aboard. A passed ball on the fourth pitch from Guerrero during Brendan Sencaj’s at-bat would put both Mainers’ runners in scoring position. Sencaj, like the Nighthawks back in the third, would put a deep fly that would score the runner from third and add a run to the board. That’s all the damage the Mainers could deal; they still trailed 3-1.
Upper Valley would fire back with another stellar offensive inning as they batted through the order, plating four and adding a huge insurance gap. It was three straight walks for the Nighthawks. Cooper Blauser would get on in four pitches, Nick Monile in six, and Jack Spanier in five. Cole Fellows would single to drive in Blauser and Monile, then it was a 2-out single from Anthony Greco to score Fellows and Spanier. The Nighthawks would take a commanding 7-1 lead.
The bats continued to stay hot in the 7th & 8th. In the 7th, it was Cole Fellows who knocked his second single of the evening, which was followed up with another from Ryan Preisano. With runners on the corners and one out, who else but Anthony Greco would slap a single to score Cole Fellows and notch his fifth RBI. The 8th saw 3 more runs come across in the top of the 8th. A.J. Brotz would have a leadoff walk, then Cameron Boardman would be plunked to once again present a 2 on, nobody out scenario. Michael Trommer came into the game for Blauser, and the returning Nighthawk delivered. He would have a single into center to score Brotz, and Boardman would score on an RBI fielder’s choice from Nick Monile. Spanier delivered a fly ball to left field that couldn’t be caught by Mainers’ left fielder __ that would continue to roll, giving Spanier 2 bases, scoring Nick Monile. The Nighthawks would extend to a 10-run lead, their first since North Adams.
JT Guerrero gets the win in his first NECBL start. He was just an inning shy of a quality start, but his five innings were of high quality. He would give up just five hits and one earned run, along with one walk and TEN strikeouts.
Josh Kopetski would earn the loss in his Mainers’ start. He would give up four hits, allow three hits, three earned runs, two walks, and strike out three.
The Nighthawks will end their road trip in Sanford once again for a 6:30 PM first pitch.
