Waves Crash on Newport, Pell Bridge Series Tied 1-1

Date:  Source: Ocean State Waves

WAKEFIELD, RI - After falling against Newport 7-5 at Cardines Field, it was time for Game 2 of this summer's Pell Bridge Series. The Waves welcomed the Gulls to Old Mountain Field for a father’s day showdown, seeking a big win and return to .500.

Ocean State’s trust in young SS Brandon DeGoti (Miami) paid off in a major way. In his first start of the season, batting leadoff, he went 3-4 with 2 RBIs and a walk. He scored a run in the first inning, then helped start a big 5th with an RBI single.

CF Gavin Gregor (Bryant) followed with an RBI double, then came across to score on a wild pitch. Three scoreless innings and 4 strikeouts from RHP Cole Richardson (Southern Miss) helped the Waves secure an early 4-1 lead.

The Gulls responded in the 6th, with a three-run homer from DH Cade Brown (Georgia) and some small ball to get 3B Colby Wallace (East Carolina) across the plate. The bottom of the 6th saw its share of drama. Highlighted by a contentious pitching violation during a sequence that included walks and stolen bases from LF Kolton Reynolds (Tennessee-Wesleyan) and RF Ryan Gererty (Northeastern), the Gulls surrendered 2 runs and trailed 6-5 entering the 7th.

Looking for some late insurance, the Waves secured a knockout blow after a trio of late runs. With RBIs from 2B Jack LaRose (UConn) and SS DeGoti, plus C Brandyn Durand (Bryant) finding home on a wild pitch, the Waves entered the 9th with a 9-5 lead. RHP Ryan McHugh (Harvard) was called on for the close and slammed the door with a scoreless inning.

After the win, the Waves improved their record to 4-4, while they evened the series against Newport 1-1 on the season. The Waves will be back in action Tuesday at home, where they welcome the Mystic Schooners. First pitch scheduled for 6:30 PM.
