The Cal Ripken Sr. Collegiate Baseball League is witnessing an impressive season from Southern Maryland Senators' outfielder Carter Groen (UConn). Groen's performance this season in the CRSCBL has established himself as the face of the Senators and one of the faces of the league.
In the regular season, Groen led the Senators with an impressive .347 batting average and 1.153 OPS. His power is also undeniable, with nine home runs that not only topped his team but also led the entire league. This highlights his ability to change the game with a single swing and showcases his exceptional power.
His overall offensive proficiency is underscored by a slash line of .347/.448/.705, showcasing his capability to excel in the three most important offensive fields, placing him among the league's elite hitters.
Groen's knack for timely hits is a crucial asset to the Senators. Leading the team with 24 RBI in the regular season solidified his role as a pivotal run producer. His fourth-inning home run in Game 1 of the semifinals against the Aces broke a scoreless tie in a game the Senators ultimately won 4-3.
While offense tends to take the headlines, Groen's contributions aren't limited to just his power and hitting ability. He also exhibits notable speed on the base paths, amassing 10 stolen bases, which ranked second on the team behind Nathan Brewer (Middle Tennessee State). This combination of power and speed makes Groen a versatile threat to opposing teams, whether he's at bat or on the bases.
Senators’ head coach Scott Middleton speaks highly of his right fielder and what he brings every time he steps out on the field. “Carter man… A couple of diving plays and making work with the bat, he’s just clutch. He comes up big in big situations.”
When patrolling the outfield, Groen stands out with his dependable glove. His adeptness at tracking down anything hit his way, coupled with precise, clean throws, solidifies Groen's reputation as a true five-tool player. He has maintained a flawless fielding record this season, with zero errors in his 31 outfield starts. He made several highlight-reel defensive plays in right field in the semifinals to help boost the Senators into the finals for the first time in team history.
His standout season was also evident in this year’s All-Star game, where Groen collected two hits and drove in one of the three runs scored for the South.
Outside of his baseball card stats, Middleton emphasizes what Groen has been as a teammate, especially alongside his outfield partner Brewer. “They’re great teammates, they keep the dugout up and they’re just great… Trust me, I’d be lying to you if I wasn’t trying to get them back for next season.”
Earning the Senators their first championship appearance in just their second year in the league, Groen looks to continue his success and lead them to their first title.
