ABL Adds Innovative New Rule for 2023

by Garrett W. Gagnon

“We are calling this rule, Sudden Death Rule, for extra inning games.”

No we are not playing Star Wars trivia, Darth Vadar never uttered the above line as he stared fervently at his death star. This is in fact what Alaska Baseball League commissioner Chip Dill told me recently while explaining a new rule that will be implemented in ABL play this season. “As a league, we are trying to ensure that players will not be overworked. Players and coaches alike should have confidence in the Alaska Baseball League, and never worry about injury as a result of pitcher usage or not getting proper rest.” Sudden Death Rule has been thoughtfully created by the league itself in the hopes of shortening extra inning contests. Here’s everything you need to know about the spicy new rule:

This rule will eliminate the possibility of multiple extra innings in the event of a tied game. The Sudden Death Rule ensures a maximum of 1.5 extra innings per ballgame.

Following the 9th inning, or 7th inning for a double header, the first extra inning will be played as usual, top and bottom. If the game remains tied after the 10th inning, or again in the case of a double header after the 8th inning, both head coaches will meet at home plate with the plate umpire. (Here’s where things get interesting.)

The home team will choose to play the next half inning on either offense or defense. That’s right, home team gets to select themselves if they prefer to hit or pitch for this final half inning.

Once decided, the team on offense will place a runner at first base, whichever player made the last out of the previous inning. The final half inning is played with standard NCAA rules. If the defense does not allow a run, they win the game. If the offense can score that runner from first base, they win. Sudden Death Rule!

Team owners hope that ABL fans will enjoy the added excitement that this rule brings to late innings. This rule will eliminate five hour ballgames, has been created with the best interest of all ABL players in mind, and is one of the most creative league additions to date. Sudden Death Rule is coming to a ballpark near you… if you live in Alaska.
