WILD FINISH SEEMS LIKELY
Date: Aug 15, 2022
Little Falls, NJ- After getting rained out the past two days the New Jersey Jackals (6-10) faced another French-Canadian team as their longtime rival from the north, the Quebec Capitales (16-3) came into town for a weekend 3 game series. The Jackals lost another slugfest tonight as they dropped the game, 14-3.
The Capitales started off the scoring with a single by Webb Little and another single by David Glaude in the top of the second inning to lead 2-0. But the Jackals answered right back with two of their own. Santiago Chirino started off the scoring bottom of the second, hitting a triple down the right field line, which scored Jason Agresti all the way from 1st base. George Bell Jr. then knotted the score at two with a sacrifice fly.
But the tie would not last for very long as the Capitales third baseman T.J. White cracked one deep over the left field wall to give the Capitales back the lead 3-2 for good. Then Quebec scored on Jackals pitching on a wild pitch in the top of the 4th and a Jeffry Parra two run homer, giving Quebec a 6-2 advantage.
And Quebec answered again in the top of the 5th with another Webb Little single to score Jonathan Lacroix, extending the lead to 7-2. Then the Capitales widened the deficit even more, scoring six runs in the top of the seventh inning and one more for good measure in the ninth to win 14-3.
In a game like this, the unique and feel-good stories carry the day- Dalton Combs shaved one run off the deficit in the ninth inning with a homer to left and two pitchers made their Jackals debuts: Mizuki Akatsuka, a switch-pitcher from Japan, made his first American professional appearance, working two innings, striking out four and showing off his unique glove, firing strikes from both sides of the mound. After Akatsuka came Owen Reith who, until this game, was serving as the Jackals Clubhouse Attendant- providing pregame meals, equipment and yes, even doing their laundry. Wearing a crisp white uniform he took out of the dryer this morning, the sidearmer allowed just one run and four singles to close the Jackals pitching ledger on the evening.
These teams will meet again for game two of the series on Saturday, June 4th at 6:05pm EST for Saturday Fireworks and New Jersey's 25th Anniversary Celebration.
