Sparkes is one of four Ontario Junior Hockey League players on NHL Central Scouting’s Preliminary Players to Watch list for the 2022 NHL Draft.

At 6 feet and 7.75 inches and 231 pounds, the defenceman is possibly the biggest player in the 21-team OJHL.

The 18-year-old from Toronto joined the Buzzers from the St. Michael’s College School and Don Mills Flyers U18 teams. He previously played for the Toronto Titans U16 squad.

“My experience in the OJHL has been great so far,” Sparkes told the OJHL Friday. “I really enjoy playing for the Buzzers. We have a good group of guys that want to win. Our coaching staff has helped me develop as a player, and has created a winning atmosphere in our locker room.”

The Buzzers like their big man a lot.

“We are very happy with Jack’s commitment to Michigan State,” said St. Mike’s Head Coach and General Manager Rich Ricci. “He follows a long line of Buzzers to suit up for the Spartans. Jack is a late bloomer and is demonstrating a keen desire to become a pro player.

“Very coachable and a well-liked teammate, Jack has a mean streak to match his hulking figure. He is a great skater for his size, possessing a long reach and a bomb for a shot. We expect big things from him over the next year and a half, and with any luck a possible NHL draft selection in June.”

Why Michigan State, Jack?

“I chose Michigan State for a few reasons,” Sparkes said. “They have a great hockey history and I really like the coaching staff. The hockey facilities are world class and support for student athletes is a priority for the school.

“It has always been a dream and goal of mine to play NCAA hockey. After going on my recruiting trip, watching practice and spending some time with the coaches and current team, it was an easy decision to make.”

Sparkes has four goals and four assists in 15 games this season.

Expect to see NHL scouts in the crowd when the Buzzers play the Toronto Patriots in a home-and-home series this weekend: Saturday at 7:30 p.m. at Westwood Arena in Etobicoke and Sunday at 2 p.m. at St. Mike’s.

Congratulations to Jack and best of luck in the OJHL and NCAA!
