Jared Coccimiglio of the Ontario Junior Hockey League’s St. Michael’s Buzzers has confirmed his commitment to join the NCAA Division I’s University of Maine Black Bears in Orono, Maine beginning with the 2023-24 season.
“The Buzzers are thrilled to announce Jared's commitment to Maine,” said St. Mike’s head coach and general manager Rich Ricci. “Jared’s development in the past year has dramatically accelerated. He possesses pro-level speed with a high degree of skill and hockey intelligence.”
“We expect a lot from him in terms of production and leadership in the upcoming years. He is in good hands with the Maine staff and we expect him to be a standout college hockey player.”
The 5-foot-8 forward played four games for St. Mike’s in 2019-20 as an affiliate from the Richmond Hill Coyotes U16 squad. He re-signed with the storied Toronto franchise ahead of the ill-fated 2020-21 season.
Coccimiglio, now 17, had 30 points (19 goals/11 assists) in 34 games in his U16 season. He was a 10th round pick of the Owen Sound Attack in the 2020 OHL Priority Selection.
He scored 10 goals and added 15 assists during his U15 year with the Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds AAA team.
The Oakville resident says he’ll be proud to wear the navy and powder blue – be it at St. Mike’s or Maine.
“Being a Buzzer is extremely special and it is a dream come true to play for a team I grew up idolizing,” Coccimiglio said. “For Maine, the moment I started talking to the coaching staff, I knew I wanted to be a part of the culture that Coach (Ben) Barr is going to build. They believe in me as a player and a person and that’s all I can ask for and it’s such an honour to have the opportunity to commit there.”
“The passion for Maine hockey is unmatched and I can’t wait to experience it firsthand.”
Congratulations to Jared and best of luck in the OJ and the NCAA!
The OJHL, the largest Jr. A hockey league in Canada, has had more than 120 NCAA, U Sports, CHL and professional commitments in 2019-20 – including more than 45 NCAA Division I scholarships.
