The Cobourg Cougars of the Ontario Junior Hockey League (OJHL) are pleased to announce that 2000-born defenseman Derek Raposo has committed to Anna Maria College for 2021. Derek will continue his hockey career with the AMCats while studying Fire Sciences, as he pursues a career as a firefighter.

"Since joining the Cougars Derek has been a tremendous role model, both on and off the ice for our organization," said General Manager Alex Guiney. "Under challenging circumstances this year, due to the pandemic, Derek came to the rink each day with a determination to be his best and was a leader for our group, bringing a positive attitude to the rink each day. We wish him the absolute best at Anna Maria and look forward to following his continued success."

"Getting the chance to play in a junior hockey market like Cobourg was a great experience," said Raposo on his time with the Cougars. "The way the community supports the Cougars is something I'll never forget."

Derek played his minor hockey in the Niagara area and signed with the Cougars in 2019, after playing two seasons in the GOJHL with the Ancaster Avalanche and Hamilton Kilty B's organization. During his rookie season with the Cougars, Derek posted 20 points (2G, 18A) while leading the team as an Assistant Captain. Derek broke out offensively during the Cougars' 'Bubble Series' vs the Whitby Fury, posting 6 points (2G, 4A) in 7 games before the OJHL shut down due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

"I'm grateful for my time in the OJHL and for being given a platform and opportunity to showcase myself. Thanks to the league I will have memories that last me a lifetime."
