NBHL team?

Our team is located in Austin Texas and is is a mash up of players that currently play in in the Texas Ball Hockey league. We are a melting pot of players with many that have moved to Austin that have hockey in their roots. We have players that have played professionally, on a national level, to some that have grown up playing hockey here in central Texas.

Ball hockey background?

I grew up in Richmond B.C. Canada and have been playing ball hockey since I was probably 5 years old. I played in intramurals in high school and various leagues growing up, along with endless hours of drop in hockey with players from all across Canada including some that played for the national team. I have been fortunate enough to be able to continue playing hockey after moving to Texas with some of the most incredible team mates/friends that anyone could ask for. Currently I am the President of Texas Ball Hockey.

Expectations for NBHL?

My expectation for NBHL is to really help grow the game of hockey here in Texas to where we are able to continually grow the game and compete at a high level in the NBHL. I am very excited to be able to be a part of the NBHL considering how Texas Ball Hockey started. We have been able to grow as a league quite a bit and the talent level of players that continue to come out are incredible. We have played in a few locally hosted tournaments and have faired well. For now I think my expectation for the team will be able to complete during every game and hopefully strive for first place in the state of Texas. For me personally, I just hope I can make the team at this point! Age is no longer on my side, so it is going to take a bit of conditioning to make sure I make and contribute to the team. Being a bit superstitious when it comes to hockey, giving a prediction of how we are going to do, ranks up there with NHL players touching the cup before they win it. I am going to leave that one alone!

Favorite ball hockey memory?

After moving to Texas in 2001, there was very limited choices to play any hockey at all. There was some ice hockey but times were scattered and price was quite high. Back around 2012 there was a group call street birds that were playing ball hockey but they quickly folded and moved on. In an attempt to keep playing, Craig Lombardi, Jim Nicholson and myself continued at a small court in my subdivision. Lemar Ortiz joined us shortly after and what was once a small group of guys playing pick up, transformed (due to the hard work and Vision of Lemar) into Texas Ball Hockey. We now have a multi-team league, a women's only league and ran our first kids hockey camp. Sort of the icing on the cake is that the League Trophy was named after me, Lord Danley's Pint. That is just a really cool story and a really cool honor to have a Trophy named after you.

Best team you’ve been on?

A good friend from the league Nick Boland had been playing with us for a number of years. Nick plays net and unfortunately had not won a championship since he started playing. We put together a real good team during one of the 2019 seasons and Nick was our Goaltender. What was also great was that Lemar and I were reunited again on that team and were able to bring home the championship for Nick. It was a pretty fun night and a great memory to be a part of, not only did Nick get the Lord Danley's pint but he also took home the league MVP heavy weight belt and game ball.
