Hitter of the Day

On June 8, 2018, making his VBL debut, Purcellville's Luke Berryhill went a little nuts against Strasburg, finishing the game 3-5, with three home runs, 10 RBIs, and a hit-by-pitch. It was, by far, the best debut that ATVL has ever heard of. (Purcellville won the game, 15-5.) The catcher from South Carolina didn't stay long- just ten games- but he went 11-40, with a double, triple, and four home runs in those games (he slugged .650). Berryhill went back to SC for his junior year, and was drafted by the Cincinnati Reds in the 13th round of the 2019 draft. He spent 2019 in Low-A Greeneville of the Appalachian League, and is still active.

Pitcher of the Day

On June 8, 2013, Staunton's Max Povse took the mound against Covington, and threw eight shutout innings, allowing only two hits, one walk, and striking out 10 to earn the win in a 9-1 victory. That summer, Povse went 2-2, 3.33, with a 1.167 WHIP, 2.0 BB/9, and 10.0 K/9 in 42 2/3 innings pitched. He returned to UNC Greensboro, where, in 2014, he struck out 81 batters in 79 1/3 innings, and was subsequently drafted by the Atlanta Braves in the 3rd round of the 2014 draft. He signed, and spent the next five years in pro ball, making his major league debut in 2017 with the Seattle Mariners. He did not pitch in 2019, and has been released from Seattle's system.
