Wrapping up Home Opening Weekend, the Mayhem defeated the Huntsville Havoc with a sound defensive effort, winning by a 2-1 score on Saturday night.

The Huntsville Havoc found the start they wanted, capitalizing off a turnover and opening the scoring just 19 seconds into the game. Tyler Piacentini stuffed a shot past Kevin Entmaa from the left circle to give the visitors a 1-0 advantage.

Macon earned a pair of first period power plays and had several opportunities to respond. Stepan Timofeev drew the second man-advantage by absorbing a high stick, which gave the Mayhem the chance they needed. Timofeev linked up with Stephen Pierog, who fed Caleb Cameron a pass on the left wing on the zone entry. Cameron ripped a wrist shot from the left circle and placed it perfectly, beating Mike DeLaVergne over the glove to level the score. In a frightening moment to end the period, Mayhem defenseman Ryan Devine had his lip split open on the ice, which led to a trail of blood leading from the Macon zone all the way to the tunnel.

The second period yielded a 5-on-3 power play opportunity for the Mayhem after Alec Brandrup accidentally cleared the puck directly out of play from his own zone. The Mayhem could not convert on the ensuing man-advantage, and both teams entered the second intermission tied at a goal apiece.

Early in the third period, Pierog acquired the puck in the left corner of the Huntsville zone and shoveled it into the slot. Jimmy Soper received the pass and rifled a shot over DeLaVergne’s glove, giving the Mayhem their first lead of the night.

After enduring a brutal wound to the face and receiving seven stitches on his nose and mouth, Devine returned to the game to start the third period and was penalized for roughing in the closing minutes. The Mayhem survived the late onslaught and secured their first victory of the season.

Entmaa earned his first win of the season, stopping an impressive 17 of 18 shots on goal. DeLaVergne denied 20 of 22 in his first defeat. The Mayhem will return to the Macon Centreplex next weekend to host the Roanoke Rail Yard Dawgs on Friday night and the Birmingham Bulls on Saturday. For tickets, click here.
