WHEATLEY – One thing is very obvious after the six games the Blenheim Blades
have played so far this season in the Provincial Junior Hockey League’s Stobbs
Division - the team has won all the low scoring games by a goal.
Wednesday night was no exception as veteran goalie Chris DeWulf stoned the
Wheatley Sharks stopping 42 of 44 shots as he led his team to a 3-2 victory.
The Blades are now 3-3-0-0 on the year for six points, and a share of third place
with the Amherstburg Admirals. Both teams are a point up on the Petrolia Flyers,
and two ahead of the Sharks, the Dresden Kings and the Essex ’73s.
The Blades will play the Kings Friday night at 7:30 in Dresden, then travel to
Wallaceburg Saturday for an 8 p.m. match with the 1-6-0-0 Thunderhawks, before
heading for Essex Tuesday for a 7 p.m. contest with the ’73s.
The team will not be home again until next Sunday when the first-place
Mooretown Flags pay a visit at 7 p.m.
Blenheim took a 1-0 early first period lead thanks to a goal by David Cooke at
3:13. The tally was Cooke’s first of the season, and was assisted by defenceman
Keegan MacVoy.
Wheatley tied things at 15:33 when Lucas Poisson scored.
The second 20 minutes saw the same setup with Blenheim going up 2-1 thanks
to a powerplay score by Seth Henderson at 47 seconds. The goal was Henderson’s
sixth of the season with Ryan Malott and MacVoy assisting.
Late in the period Alex Anastaskos got the Sharks back even at 17:59.
The only goal of the third period, and it proved to be the winner, came off the
stick of Blenheim rookie Nick Tetreault. It was his first of the year and was set up
by Carter Wright and Henderson.
Wright then took a boarding penalty with 2:58 to play, but DeWulf and the
penalty killers did their job to preserve the win.
BLADES BITS: The Blades now own the best penalty kill percentage in the league
at 90.48 allowing just two powerplay goals while killing off 19…Blenheim had just
25 shots on Wheatley netminder Kyle Metson and took 32 of 40 penalty minutes

that included misconducts to Wight and Noah Tetrault for boarding…Attendance
was 310…DeWulf, as should have been the case, was picked as first star of the
game.
