Games this past week:

South Muskoka Shield @ New Tecumseth Civics

10.3.19- Civics 8, Shield 0

Securing this one without a doubt the Civics had a four goal third period to secure the win in an eventual 8-0 triumph over the South Muskoka Shield in a GMHL match-up Thursday at New Tec Rec

Seven different skaters were able to find twine in this game with defenseman Mikhail Kornilov connecting first on the power play for the eventual game winner. That would be all of the action in the first period and the Civics would go into the first intermission up one.

It didn’t take long for Matthew Senra to put the hosts up by a pair when he scored 2 minutes into the middle frame.

Rookie forward Savva Verbetskii found the Civics second power play goal of the game before Maksim Kalashnikov rounded out the second period scoring at the 11 minute mark.

The Civics then added 4 in the 3rd period to leave no doubt in this one. Vadim Tsyrkunov scored 30 seconds into the period and 2 minutes later Roman Kulakov got on the scoresheet himself.

Senra, Kulakov and Nadeau would stay in rhythm as the line produced the last two goals of the game with Senra collecting his second of the game and Nadeau icing it in the last minute.

Civics starter Artur Veiber was able to collect his first shutout of the season turning away all 35 saves he faced.

Iskander Shamsiyev started in the Shield net and faced 34 attempts in defeat before Koby Lukehart played the final 10 minutes allowing 1 goal on 10 shots..

New Tecumseth Civics @ Bancroft RockHounds

10.5.19- Civics 7, RockHounds 0

Rookie forward Vadim Tsyrkunov supplied the game winner while first year netminder Chris Cabral made 44 stops to post his second shutout in helping the New Tecumseth Civics skate to their seventh consecutive GMHL victory Saturday as they topped the Bancroft RockHounds 7-0 at the North Hastings Community Centre.

Meeting the RockHounds for the second consecutive week,  Tsyrkunov opened up the scoring with the game winner just over the mid-way point of the 1st period, the Civics would add to that lead before the end of the period when veteran forward Maksim Kalashnikov scored twice in the same shift to send the Civics into the first intermission up 3.

The only man advantage opportunity in the game would go to the Civics who were unable to capitalize on the games only power play 5 minutes into the second. The Civics would however add another pair of even strength goals before the end of the frame off the sticks of Captain Riley Nadeau and assistant Captain Vadim Shatunov

The visitors were not quite done yet as in the third they added two more goals with defenseman Emils Erglis and forward Roman Kulakov both scoring shortly after the 10 minute mark

Mikhail Kornilov (3 Assists) and Viacheslav Vorobev (2 Assists) both chipped in to help the Civics secure the victory.

A big edge in shots favoured Bancroft by a 44-27 margin with Cabral picking up the win and Addison Zeich suffering the loss.

New Tecumseth Civics @ Ottawa SharpShooters

10.6.19- Civics 12, SharpShooters 2

Matt Senra tallied once and dished out four assists supplying a career high 5 points, pacing the New Tecumseth Civics to a 12-2 decision over the Ottawa SharpShooters in GMHL play Sunday at the Richcraft Sensplex.

It was tight after one period, where each side had a power play goal, with Vadim Tsyrkunov scoring with the man advantage for the Civics and Hakim Ratt converting his chance for the Sharp Shooters. Roman Kulakov had the game’s first goal while Senra had the eventual game winner. Viacheslav Vorobev rounded out the Civics first period scoring while Ratt added his second to send the game into the first intermission with a 4-2 score.

From then on the game would be all Civics.

The middle frame would see the Civics special teams put on a clinic, following the periods opening goal from Lane Knapp a minute into the frame, the Civics would go on to convert 4 power play oppurtunities. Savva Verbetskii scored two of the man advantage goals while Vadim Shatunov and Emils Erglis provided the others as the Civics went into the second break up 9-2.

The power play chemistry would continue in the third as Riley Nadeau sent one home before Vorobev scored his second to make the game 11-2.

As the game wound down there was still one more milestone to be met when rookie Brandon Thiesenhuesen unleashed a shot from the point that found its way into the back of the net providing him with his first junior hockey goal and point.

Picking up the win in net for the Civics was Yaroslavl Leontev, who made 26 stops in the triumph.

Jakub Biernat and Steven Prati both saw time between the pipes for Ottawa, facing a combined 52 attempts in defeat.

Home Game this week:

Bradford Rattlers @ New Tecumseth Civics

10.3.19- 8:30 New Tecumseth Rec Centre

One year ago the Civics sat in fourth place in the league with 4 wins and looked up at the top of the standings to see the Bradford Rattlers, how times have changes. The Civics, now at the top of the standings themselves, will be facing off against the Rattlers, in fourth place with four wins, this Thursday in the first matchup of the year between the cross highway rivals. The Civics head into this contest with a 10-1-0 record having won their last 8 games with a combined score total of 68-14. When it comes to forward depth there may be no deeper team in the league than the Civics who trot out 8 forwards who are averaging more than a point per game through season play so far led by League Points and Assists Leader Riley Nadeau (34 Points) and his line mates Matthew Senra (27 points 3rd in league) and Roman Kulakov (24 Points 6th in league). The Rattlers will counter with leading scorer Mike Dyck, Yuri Shklyaruk, and Evgeny Lukin. The Defensive cores for the matchup will each be led by a pair of veterans as Mikhail Kornilov and Emils Erglis lead the Civics blue line while the Rattlers counter with Simon Birkehorn and Zakk Bekolay. The last time these two teams squared off the battle in net was between Artur Veiber and Trevor Babin, and with both goalies back this season the expectation was that the match up would be the same, however with Trevor Babin out for the contest Veiber will likely see Milan Koznar as his counterpart. This game is sure to see lots of action as the North Division Rivals have seen every time they meet.
