Five Goal First Lifts Beavers

BOULDER, CO- Sophomore forward Davis Sheldon scored three times, and Senior goaltender, Holden Kurtz stopped all 21 shots he faced in his first start of the season. The Beavers improve to 2-0 on the season, following the sweep.

Just under three minutes into the first period, Sophomore forward Davis Sheldon, took a pass from Junior forward Adam Wowryk, and beat the Buffs goalie for his 3rd of the season and made it 1-0 Beavers. Five minutes later, on the powerplay Freshman forward Kirklan Lycar threaded a beautiful pass back door to Senior forward Johl Swedlo who riffled it home for his 4th of the year. Moments later, Freshman defenceman Austin Wieler dished the puck to Sheldon who fired it upstairs over the Buffs goaltenders glove, which made it 3-0. Just 30 seconds later Sophomore forward Drew Carter squeaked one past Tripp Hutchinson for his first of the season. Then Senior forward Kent Walchuck buried a rebound to extend the lead to 5-0. This goal chased the Buffs goaltender Tripp Hutchinson, Grant Payne came on in relief. Kurtz stopped all five shots he faced. The Beavers went 1-1 on the man advantage. 

In the second period, the Beavers extended the lead to 6-0 when Grayson Neufeld beat Payne through traffic for his first of the season. Midway through the period, Davis Sheldon completed the hat-trick when he tipped a point shot home from Sophomore defenceman Connor Shuster, to make it 7-0. Kurtz remained perfect with 11 saves.

“My line with Navrot and Metcalf are really clicking just like we were at the end of last year, so it’s nice for it to carry over into the new season,” said Sheldon.

In the third period, Adam Wowryk connected on the powerplay to make it 8-0. Kurtz had a make a flurry of saves in the third period, he made 12 saves in the period to preserve the shutout.  

Head Coach Wade Regier is pleased with the sweep in Colorado, but he already changing focus to next weekend against Jamestown. “The offense really came alive today. We needed a great start and we got one. I was proud of the boys all weekend. Now we have to turn focus into a huge weekend against our arch-rival Jamestown,” said Regier.

The Beavers will be back in action next Thursday when they travel to Jamestown, ND, to battle the Jimmies. Beaver fans don’t forget about the Home Opener Friday night against the Jimmies.  The Beavers will raise the banner at 7:15 PM prior to the game.
