Hockey / LIONS SPLIT SECOND WEEKEND OF THE SEASON

LIONS SPLIT SECOND WEEKEND OF THE SEASON

Date:  Source: The College of New Jersey Lions

The Lions were coming off a long weekend against difficult opponents looking to get above .500 on the young season. On Friday night they welcomed the Montclair State Red Hawks to the friendly confines of Loucks Ice Center. The Lions came out flying in the first period and were out shooting the Red Hawks 15-1 at one point but could not finish leading to a scoreless first period. The second period started well when senior Kris Hastings scored on an odd man rush but the Red Hawks would respond with three unanswered goals, two of them being power play goals. TCNJ would answer with two power play goals of their own, first by Dan Martin and the second by JP Kelly so the game would go into the third period tied at three. The Red Hawks would regain the lead early in the third period on a shorthanded goal on a delayed penalty and then would add two more power play goals to gain a 6-3 lead, they would add an empty netter to finish the game 7-3 dropping the Lions to 1-3 on the season. Sophomore defenseman Jameson Dugan had two power play assists and junior goalie Nick Pontoriero stopped 25 of the 31 shots he faced.

Saturday's game was against the West Point Black Knights and the Lions were shorthanded as they were missing two of their better defensemen as captain Marc Tietjen and Travis Beni were out of the lineup. The first period was an even period but unlike on Friday TCNJ would find the back of the net. Matt Lojewski would tip home a Jameson Dugan point shot halfway through the period and then Anthony DeAlto would hammer home a pass from Andrew Lem giving giving the Lions a two goal lead, stellar play from Mike Lojewski in net would preserve the lead into the second period. Sophomore defenseman Patrick Willever would push the lead to three but Army would respond with two quick goals to cut it to a one goal game. Junior forward Lawrence Kruglyak would convert a weird bounce in the crease to regain a two goal lead going into the third period. Early in the third period Army would capitalize on a neutral zone turnover and make it a one goal game again but junior forward Dan Martin would score an incredible goal on a great move, going bardown to again restore the two goal lead. Kevin Broskie would seal the game with an empty netter, Andrew Summa had two assists and Mike Lojewski was excellent making 39 saves as the Lions crawled back to 2-3 on the year.
