Frederick and Hegarty Take Home Final Weekly Accolades of 2019

Date:  Source: New England Collegiate Baseball League

NORTH ADAMS, Mass. – Upper Valley infielder Cole Frederick (Jacksonville State) and Martha’s Vineyard southpaw Daniel Hegarty (Kansas) have been named the New England Collegiate Baseball League’s (NECBL) Player and Pitcher of the Week, respectively, for the final week of the 2019 regular season.

The league’s regular season leader in batting average nearly from wire-to-wire, Frederick – an All-Star – picks up his second Player of the Week accolade this summer after another incredible week at the dish. He led the NECBL with a .600 batting average on nine hits in 15 tries while scoring six runs, driving in seven more and clubbing six extra-base hits (four doubles, one triple, one home run). He stuck out just twice and committed only one error in that span. He had two or more hits in three of those four games he played with two three-hit outings along the way.

The rising junior at Jacksonville State, who was a late arriver after his college team qualified for the NCAA Championship, has refused to slow down this summer and is threatening to set a new single-season batting average record, currently sporting a .430 clip with 58 hits in 135 at-bats. He also has 27 runs, six homers and 34 RBIs while owning a 1.172 OPS. Frederick batted .287 for the Gamecocks as a sophomore with 75 hits, 14 doubles, six homers and 38 RBIs.

Hegarty, meanwhile, helped Martha’s Vineyard maintain its lead in the NECBL South Division with a gem on July 27. He struck out seven of the 24 batters he faced over 6-1/3 innings while scattering five hits and yielding only a single earned run to help the Sharks grind out a 3-1 road win at Keene. He did not allow a walk in that outing, which helped him improve to 4-1 on the summer with 30 strikeouts over 36 innings. He also lowered his season WHIP to 1.25.

A rising junior at Kansas, Hegarty made 23 appearances for the Jayhawks this spring with 23 strikeouts over 22-2/3 innings.
