GAME DAY – Friday, July 12, 2019

 

DANVILLE, 4  REX 5   (GM 1) - The Terre Haute REX, the 2018 Prospect League defending champions, are playing like champions again, winning their ninth straight game with a 5-4 win at home over the East Division leaders, the Danville Dans.

The Dans got on the board first with a run in the top of the first inning, the REX responding with three runs in the bottom of the first, adding a run in the third and fourth inning to give them a 5-1 lead. The Dans scored three runs in the top of the 5th before both bullpens shut down the opposition over the final two innings.

The REX scored five runs on six hits and seven walks. Right-fielder Romero Harris, from Canton, OH, a senior at Indiana State University had the only extra-base hit in game one, a double, while first baseman Ross Indlecoffer, from Vadnals Height, MN, a sophomore at Iowa Western Community College drove in two runs.

Terre Haute starter Max Klein, (W, 2-1, 7.71 ERA), from Rockford, IL, a freshman at Indiana State University, got his second win on the year, pitching 4.2 innings, giving up four runs on six hits and two walks, while striking out six. Reliever Colton Panaranto, (7-1, 2.04 ERA, 7 SVs), from Terre Haute, IN, a freshman at Michigan State University, who is currently the odds on favorite for Fireman of the Year, earned his seventh save with two shutout innings, giving up two hits, striking out one of the eight batters he faced.

The Dans offense was led by right-fielder Sam Crail, from Sheridan, IN, a sophomore at Indiana University, who went 2-for-4 with a home run, his third and three RBI.

On the mound for Danville, starter Kaleb Hill, (L, 0-1, 4.15 ERA), from Pine Bluff, AR, a freshman at Ole Miss, was tagged with the loss, giving up four unearned runs on two hits, four walks in his two innings of work.

DANVILLE, 1  REX, 2  (GM 2) – It was a pitching duel in game two of the doubleheader with the Terre Haute REX extending their winning streak to 10 games, a new franchise record, with a 2-1 win over the Danville Dans.

The Dans scored one run on a solo homer in the sixth inning from their left-fielder and leadoff man, Max Jung Goldberg, from Palo Alto, CA, a freshman at the University of San Diego.

The Terre Haute REX scored twice in the bottom of the first before the Dans bullpen shut them down for six innings.

The REX scored two runs on six hits, with the leadoff man and right fielder Aaron Beck, from Evansville, IN, a sophomore at Olney Central College, having the only multi-hit game, going 2-for-4 and scoring a run. Batting in the two hole, first baseman Ross Indlecoffer, from Vandals Heights, MN, a sophomore at Iowa Western Community College had a base hit and scored the other run for Terre Haute.

Danville starter Dawson Sweatt, (L, 1-2, 4.37 ERA), from Peachtree City, GA, a freshman at Auburn University took the loss, giving up two runs on five hits and four walks in his three innings on the mound.

The REX turned to Braydon Tucker, (W, 2-1, 3.62), from Brazil, IN, a freshman at Indiana University to start the nightcap. He tossed six complete innings, giving up just two hits, one of them the home run to Max Jung-Goldberg, while striking out 12 of the 21 batters he faced, in his best outing on the year, to pick up his second win on the season.

CHAMPION CITY, 2  WEST VIRGINIA, 8 – The Kings were no match for the West Virginia Miners Friday night, as Champion City’s hope for their first winning season began to fade away with the loss, losing seven of their last 10 games falling to the .500 mark with a 19-19 won-loss record and their hopes for a securing a spot in the playoffs now appearing to be a long shot at best.

The Miners scored eight runs on 13 hits and five walks, with nobody taking the ball out of the park, but six  different Miners driving in runs, including catcher Kyle Schaefer, from Queens, NY, a freshman at Marshall University, having one of the West Virginia’s four multi-hit games and perhaps the most productive batter, going 2-for-4 with two RBI, two walks, two stolen bases and a run scored. Third baseman Clay Wisner, from Bellefontaine, OH, a sophomore from Malone University scored two runs for the Miners.

On the mound, the Miners got a solid start from Joshua Zeboskey, (ND, 1-0, 4.60 ERA), from Mullens, WV, a junior at Fairmont State University, who pitched five complete frames, his longest outing on the season, giving up the two runs to the Kings on five hits and four walks while striking out one of the 24 batters he face to end up with a no-decision for his efforts. Reliever Tyler Baca, (W, 1-2, 4.69 ERA, 1 SV) from Las Vegas, NV, a junior at Missouri Baptist University, pitched two shutout innings, giving up three hits and a walk while striking out one of the eight batters he faced for his first win on the season.

Champion City racked up nine hits and drew five walks, but only scored twice, leaving 10 runners stranded on the bases. Center fielder Chase Carney, from Cincinnati, OH, a junior at Urbana University, had one of the two multi-hit games for the Kings, going 2-for-5 at the plate with a double. Shortstop William Mapes, from Suwanee, GA, a sophomore from the University of North Georgia, had the other multi-hit game for Champion City, going 2-for-4 with two doubles and a run scored.

On the hill for the Kings, starter Jorge Lozano, (ND, 0-2, 7.36 ERA), from Spring Lake, MI, a junior at Wright State University gave Champion City six solid innings, giving up two runs on seven hits and four walks, while striking out two the 26 batters he faced. Reliever William Varnadore, (L, 2-1, 9.81 ERA), from Aiken, SC, a sophomore at the University of South Carolina-Aiken, suffered his second loss on the year, giving up six runs, four of them earned on six hits and a walk.

CHILLICOTHE, 17  LAFAYETTE, 13 - There isn’t a political correct way to describe the pitching last night at the historic Loeb Stadium in Lafayette, Indiana with a combined 30 runs scored on 30 hits, 13 walks and eight wild pitches, one can only hope the pitchers have as short as a memory as some of their outings in last night offensive packed contest.

On the mound for Chillicothe, reliever Nicholas Smith, (W, 2-1, 8.82 ERA), from Mentor, OH, a sophomore at Baldwin Wallace University, got the win, despite pitching just two-thirds of an inning, giving up five runs on four hits.

Lafayette starter Bryce Grossius, (L, 0-2, 5.19 ERA), from St. Louis MO, a freshman at Southeast Missouri State University, the first of four pitchers for the Aviators, was tagged with the loss, giving up seven runs, six of them earned on seven hits and three walks, while striking out five of the 25 hitters he faced.

Somebody was racking up some stats last night, including the Paints, left-fielder Chris Eisel, from Pittsburgh, PA, a junior at Indiana University of PA, he hit for the cycle, going 4-for-4 with the home run, triple, double and a base hit, driving in three runs and scoring four. Center fielder Cody Orr, from Rossford, OH, a sophomore at Tiffin University, scored three runs, going 2-for-6 at the plate with an RBI. Infielder Collin Luty, from Milwaukee, WI, a junior at Northern Kentucky University, had a multi-hit game going 2-for-4 with a double, an RBI and three runs scored. Luty also reached base on a walk and a hit by pitch.

The Aviators had a couple of people go deep, including third baseman Kollyn All, from Lafayette, IN, a freshman at Butler University, who hit his third home run on the year, going 2-for-6 with three RBI and a run scored. Left-fielder Alex Dorethy, from Ipava, IL, a junior at Western Illinois University, hit his first home run this season, going 2-for-4 with the homer, a double, a walk, two RBI and two runs scored.

The Aviators have lost two straight and are just 3-7 over their last 10 games as a chance to win their second Prospect League Championship is slipping away.

HANNIBAL, 9  SPRINGFIELD, 5  - The Hannibal Hoots won their third straight game with a 9-5 win over the Springfield Sliders, Friday night at Robin Roberts Stadium, to win their first series of the season and move ahead of the Normal CornBelters into fourth place in the West Division standings.

The Hoots offense was led by third baseman, Damian Yenzi, from Pittsburgh, PA, a sophomore at Marietta College, who hit his third home run on the year, going 3-for-4 with the home run, a double, two RBI and a run scored. Second baseman, Joe Roscetti, from Sherman, IL, a redshirt freshman at Quincy University, hit his sixth home run on the season and scored another run after reaching base on a walk. Left-fielder Austin Woods, from West Plains, MO, a freshman at Drury University, drove in three runs with a two-run double and a sac-fly.

On the hill for Hannibal, starter Kyle Rosenfeld, (W, 3-2, 5.24 ERA), from Huntley, IL, a freshman at Western Illinois University, earned his third win, tossing 5.1 innings, giving up three runs, two of them earned on six hits and a walk, while striking out four of the 24 batters he faced.

For the Springfield Sliders, starter Corbin Cox, (L, 0-4, 4.24 ERA), from Pendleton, IN, a sophomore from Heartland Community College, was tagged with his fourth loss, giving up six runs in two innings of work.

Offensively, the Sliders leadoff man and second baseman, Alex Ludwick, from Brunswick, OH, a junior at Baldwin Wallace University, hit his third home run on the year, driving in three runs and also reaching base on a walk. Despite his efforts, Springfield keeps sliding back in the standings, losing their 10th straight game.

CAPE, 10  QUINCY 4 - Quincy got on the board first, but Cape followed putting runs on the board for five straight innings, giving them a 10-4 lead by the sixth inning, before both bullpens shut down the other side.

The Catfish designated hitter, Ellison Hanna II, from Nassau, Bahamas, a junior at Indiana State University, was the big fish in the pond last night, going 2-for-5 at the plate, driving in three runs and scoring two more. Cape had three players go deep including, shortstop Ryan Howe, from Mount Prospect, IL, a freshman at Purdue, his second home run on the year, outfielder John Behrends, from Chattanooga, TN, a redshirt freshman at Belmont University, his fourth and third baseman Christopher Jordan, from Evans, WV, a junior at West Virginia State his second round-tripper of the season.

For Quincy, the multi-talented, two-way player, Tyler Clark-Chiapparelli, hit his 12th home run on the year, driving in two runs. He also pitched 2.1 innings, giving up just one run on two hits and a walk, while striking out three of the 11 batters he faced.

At the deadline for the Prospect(us), the official scoring and for the pitching in this game have not been closed out.

DUPAGE, 10  NORMAL 6 – The DuPage Pistol Shrimp needed a win to stay 2.5 games back of the first place Cape Catfish and got it with a 10-6 win over the Normal CornBelters at Normal in the Corn Crib, for their sixth straight victory.

The Pistol Shrimp scored 10 runs on 13 hits and six walks, with their leadoff man and right-fielder Dane Toppel, from South Elgin, IL a junior at Eastern Illinois University, going 4-for-5 and scoring two runs. Batting in the two hole, second baseman Matt Waznis, from Joliet, IL, a junior at Eastern Illinois University, had a good day at the plate, going 2-for-4 with a home run, his fifth and three RBI. Shortstop Kyle Kolb, from Roanoke, IL, a senior at Missouri Valley College, hit his fourth home run this season, going 2-for-5 with three RBI.

On the mound for DuPage, reliever Kyle Strepek, (W, 1-2, 7.77 ERA), got the win, pitching 3.1 innings, giving up three runs on three hits and five walks, while striking out three of the 17 batters he faced. Reliever Noah Dressler, (4-2, 6.48 ERA, 1 SV), from Mascoutah, IL, a junior at Concordia University Chicago, earned his first save.

The CornBelters scored six runs on six hits and nine walks, with right-fielder Jeremy Drudge, from Plymouth, IN, a freshman at Valparaiso University driving in three of the runs with his second home run on the season.

Normal burned through six players with Wyatt Wendell, (L, 3-3, 7.56 ERA), getting ticketed with the loss, giving up four runs on three hits and a walk in two-thirds of an inning pitched. The loss, the CornBelters sixth straight loss as they have lost eight of their last 10 games and drop behind the Hannibal Hoots in the standings.

PLAYER OF THE DAY – Chillicothe Paints, left-fielder Chris Eisel, from Pittsburgh, PA, a junior at Indiana University of PA, hit for the cycle Friday night, going 4-for-4 with the home run, triple, double and a base hit, driving in three runs and scoring four to help lead the Paints to a 17-13 win over the Lafayette Aviators.

RAINOUTS

DUPAGE vs DANVILLE,  RAINOUT – Due to the projected rainfall the game between the Pistol Shrimp and Danville Dans on Sunday, June 16, will be rescheduled for a doubleheader on July 28th. The make-up game will take 30 minutes after the 1:05 PM games. Both games will be seven innings each.
