Bay Sox Down Gulls 9-3
By Stephen Hough – Team Publicist
NEW BEDFORD, Mass. - Newport (10-6) fell to the New Bedford Bay Sox (5-12) by a score of 9-3. Stanley Vargas picks up the win for New Bedford while Connery Peters was tagged with the loss.
The Bay Sox opened the scoring in the bottom of the second as Tommy Seidl tripled and came around to score off an RBI double from Paul Gozzo. The Gulls answered back in the third when Scott Holzwasser hit a solo home run to tie it up at one.
New Bedford would continue the scoring in the third when Alex Brickman delivered a two-run home run to give the lead back to the Bay Sox. New Bedford would keep the pressure on, scoring a run in the fourth and fifth, three in the sixth, and another run in the seventh. Down 9-1 in the ninth, Brett Vosik hit a two-run home run but it was too little, too late as the Gulls couldn’t complete the comeback.
Newport only mustered five hits on the day, three coming in the last two innings.
Newport will be back in action on Monday, July 1st against the Danbury Westerners at Cardines Field for Newport Craft Brewing & Distilling Night.
