Cheads get swept in Canada after 7-2 loss to Green Giants

After their two losses north of the border, the Copperheads are happy to be playing on U.S. soil once again.

Southern Ohio (9-10) dropped their second straight game to the Green Giants (8-7-1) on Wednesday by a score of 7 to 2.

Sebastian Fabik was one of the lone bright spots for the team, as he went 1-3 with an RBI double.

The Copperheads did all of their scoring in the first inning, as after the Fabik double, Carter Cross drove him in with an RBI groundout and that would be all the team could muster against St. Clair.

Coming into this series with the Green Giants, the offense was riding a hot streak during their five game win streak. In each of those games, the Copperheads scored at least seven runs and totaled 10 hits in four of the five games.

However, against St. Clair, the bats was put to a screeching halt, reverting back to the offensive productive from the beginning of the season that saw Southern Ohio struggle early on.

As it pertains to the streaky nature of the offense, Coach Austin Dunfee is not too worried about them.

“It’s nothing to be concerned with,” he said. “Those guys are still battling at the plate. They’re having good approaches, we’re just not getting results.”

On the mound for the Copperheads on Wednesday was Sam Wirsing, who had a third start, going six innings, while giving up eight hits and six runs, with three of those being earned. He also struck out three and walked one.

While Dunfee is not stressed about the offense, he does feel like there is some reason to worry about the long term stability of the pitching staff.

“I just think they’re getting a little overworked,” he said. “Those guys are tired. It’s been a long few weeks up to this point and they’ve been battling their tails off.”

Southern Ohio will look to rebound from the series in a two game series against the Galion Graders (4-13). First pitch from Heise Park on Thursday is scheduled for 7:05 p.m.
