NORTH ADAMS – The Moose’s second trip to Joe Wolfe Adams ended the same way as their first as heavy rain and thunderstorms give the host SteepleCats a 5-3 win after just four-and-a-half innings of play.

The Mainers capitalized on their chances to score, but the weather in North Adams took away their final four at-bats, dooming them to the loss.

In the bottom of the first, the home team's offense hit the ground running. After loading the bases with just one out, a three-run double off the bat of Scout Knotts put the SteepleCats up early. They promptly put runners back on the corners, looking primed to add to their early lead. However, Mainers starter Gerry Siracusa (Kinnelon, N.J./UMass Lowell) found his mojo on the mound. He got the last two outs in quick fashion to kill the SteepleCat rally and keep the score 3-0.

The Moose found their footing at the plate in the third inning. Ryan Turenne (Lynn, Mass./Maine) led off the frame with a line-drive double to center field. With two outs, Sterling Hayes (San Diego, Calif./Vanderbilt) brought him home with a groundball single to right field, his sixth run batted in of the year.

They went right back to work in the fourth, getting their first three batters on a Connor Tate (Bishop, Ga./Georgia) infield single and back-to-back walks from Nick Howie (Oakville, Ontario, Canada/Eastern Kentucky) and Elliott Curtis (Waterloo, Ontario, Canada/Kentucky). Turenne came back to hit with one out and delivered the game-tying hit, a two-run single.

Unfortunately, the SteepleCats got those two runs right back in the bottom of that inning. Joey Porricelli legged out an infield single to bring home Matthew Koperniak from third base, and an Andrew Pedone base hit brought him home one batter later.

Following the Mainers at-bats in the fifth inning, the weather decided to cooperate no longer. The skies opened up over the field of play and made it unplayable, giving the SteepleCats their tenth win in 2019.

The Mainers will be back in action tomorrow at the Robbie Mills Sports Complex in Laconia, New Hampshire to take on the Winnipesaukee Muskrats. As is the case for every away game, you can catch the call on the NECBL Broadcast Network as well as 104.3 FM/1220 AM “The Legends” back in Sanford. In the meantime, be sure to head over to sanfordmainers.com and follow the team on social media to stay in the loop about all things Mainers baseball.
