Gulls Top Bay Sox 11-4

By Zach Letson – Media Operations Assistant

Through excellent pitching and timely hitting, Newport (7-5) topped their Southern Division foe New Bedford (3-9) 11-4 Monday night at Cardines Field. The win moves the Gulls to 3-0 on the season against the Bay Sox.

Gulls starting pitcher Jordan Marks settled in and dominated the Bay Sox lineup, pitching seven innings, while only allowing two runs. Marks struck out eight New Bedford hitters, including a streak of six consecutive punchouts from the third to fifth inning.

With Newport trailing 2-0 entering the bottom of the fourth inning, Ryan Toohers began his big game with a double off the wall, scoring Colton Bender and getting the scoring started for the Gulls.

After taking a slim 3-2 lead into the bottom of the seventh inning, Newport broke the game open with a five-run frame. The big inning was fueled by RBI singles from Justyn-Henry Malloy, Toohers, Peter Serruto, and Greg Cavaliere to help give the Gulls a comfortable 8-2 lead heading into the eighth inning.

Mike Sansone relieved Marks and pitched an inning of shutout ball extending his scoreless streak to 8.1 innings, giving up only 2 hits and striking out 13 batters over that stretch.

The Gulls continue Southern Division play when they travel to Rogers Park on Tuesday, June 25th to take on the Danbury Westerners (7-4). First pitch is scheduled for 6:30 pm.
