Copperheads clinch series against Michigan Monarchs

Sunday night’s 8-4 victory brings the Copperheads’ record to 9-8

The Southern Ohio Copperheads now boast a five-game winning streak after clinching their series against the Michigan Monarchs with an 8-4 win Sunday evening.

Southern Ohio is now 9-8 and are over .500 for the first time this season.

“I’m happy and excited,” said head coach Austin Dunfee. “This was a very good week for the Copperheads and I’m thrilled, to put it lightly.”

Relief pitcher and Dan Inman Electric Player of the Game Braxton Kelly came into the game at a crucial time.

Southern Ohio was up 7-4 in the top of the eighth inning, but not only the were bases loaded; Kyle Burnett, a leading hitter for Michigan, who had hit a home run just one inning before, was up to bat.

Kelly struck Burnett out and ended the inning.

“I felt really confident,” said Kelly. “I’ve settled into that role this summer. It’s become more comfortable for me.”

Zyon Avery, Reese Trahey, Ben Rushing, Tanner Glass, Lucas Nasonti and Sebastian Fabik all played key roles offensively and contributed to Southern Ohio’s eight runs scored.

After five games this past week, the Copperheads will take Monday off before traveling to St. Clair, Canada, to play on Tuesday and Wednesday.

Dunfee is looking forward to the off day as well as the team’s upcoming away games.

“Those guys have been playing really hard all week long, and they need to rest on Monday,” said Dunfee. “After that, it’s back to business as soon as we get on the bus Tuesday morning.”
