Swampbats outlast Winnipesaukee in 13-10 slugfest

Date:  Source: NECBL - Keene Swamp Bats

It was an offensive affair, to say the least in Laconia, New Hampshire as the Keene Swampbats took down the Winnipesaukee Muskrats 13-10, going over .500 ball at 5-4 and avenging their 7-3 loss to the same team last Saturday.

Things started off hot in the first when Mitchell Golden lifted a high fly ball to left center and thanks to mother nature’s timely wind gust, scraped just over the left field fence, scoring Randall Bednar and putting the Swampbats up 2-0.

Long balls and mother nature killed both teams as both Winnipesaukee and Keene hit 11 total moon shots and the wind gusts at Robbie Mills Sports Complex were 10+ mph and going toward right field.

The Swampbats seemed to have a good cushion behind Luke Albright but a hanging outside fastball to Muskrat right fielder Terrance Norman was ripped into right field on a hit and run and just skimmed over the right field fence, scoring Nate Vigeant and tying the game at 2.

The Giant Purple People Eaters would strike back when Tommy Joseph, who came in with a .105 batting average, would blast a monster home run 400 plus feet into center off of Muskrat starter Luke Torbert, putting Keene ahead 3-2.

Joseph would finish the night 3 for 4 with two singles, the home run, and a walk.

“I was just seeing pitches better tonight,” said Joseph during the postgame show. “I caught a few fastballs in the right part of the bat and the wind definitely helped.”

There were several lead changes during tonight’s game and Winnipesaukee would retaliate with a two-run homer from Nate Vigeant, scoring Michael Demartino and putting the game back in favor of the Muskrats, 4-3.

Then came David Bedgood.

The junior from Tulane, who was 3 for 5 with seven RBIs, would demolish a curveball on a 1-1 count to center field, scoring Tommy Joseph and putting the Swampbats back up 5-4.

Though he gave up five earned runs, Luke Albright would go six innings and secure his second win as a Swampbat.

In the fifth, the Swampbats would secure the lead with a three-RBI triple from Bedgood, making it 8-4.

Michael Martinez then homered in the sixth to make it 8-5 but David Matthews retaliated with a moon shot to left, his NECBL leading 6th of the season and 12th RBI for the Bats as the team sustained a 9-5 lead.

Tatem Levins would hit a solo shot in the 8th to make it close at 9-6 and then things got wild.

Seth Caddell would hit a bomb to center, his first as a Swampbat, in a four-run rally for the Swampbats that included David Bedgood hitting his second home run of the night and third of the season and an RBI single from Logan Mathieu putting the Swampbat lead at 13-6 and looking out of reach for the Muskrats.

It was the first time all season that the Swampbats bottom three hitters in the order accounted for the majority of the runs scored by the men in purple and combined, Seth Caddell, Tommy Joseph, and David Bedgood were 7 for 13 with four home runs, a triple, and two singles and accounted for nine of the thirteen runs scored by Keene.

Even though they lost, Winnipesaukee would go out with a bang.

With Johnathan Edwards on the bump, Terrance Norman would hit a two-RBI single which was then followed by a two-run homer from Sam Cochrane, center fielder for the Muskrats, putting the game at 13-10 and only one out for Keene.

Edwards would get Chad Minato to pop out to right and then Antonio Knowles would strike out Nick O’Day to finish off Winnipesaukee, getting his first save and only recording one out.

It’s a gutsy win for the Swampbats and one that improves to their road record to 3-0 on the season. They will attempt to continue this road success on Sunday when they take on the Valley Blue Sox in Holyoke, Massachusetts on Sunday at 5:05 pm, looking to avenge another home loss.
