Phil Kemmer, an Assistant Captain of this year’s New Tecumseth Civics squad, has announced his commitment to Maryville University (ACHA Division 1) for the upcoming 2019-2020 season.

In his last season of junior hockey Assistant Captain Phil Kemmer was a steady force on the backend providing reliable and shutdown defensive play in the Civics zone while also getting involved offensively with 29 points on the year which placed him second among Civics defenseman and also second league wide amongst German born players. His total was also good enough for 15th amongst all graduating defenseman league wide.

Martindale, “Phil came here two seasons ago and at first was a little lost on the Canadian ice, but he worked extremely hard and slowly became our rock on the back end. Every night I knew what I was getting from Phil, I think he can make the next step into college hockey, he is a great teammate and will be missed in our lineup.”

Kemmer, the Starnberg Germany native, returned to the Civics after playing an impressive season in New Tecumseth in 2018-2019 where he was often on the top pairing and asked to shut down the opposing teams top lines. He was regarded as an elite defensive defenseman but still managed to find a way to contribute on offense thanks to his great positioning allowing him to finish 4th on the team for defenseman points with 16 (1G, 15A) in 37 games.

Civics Assistant GM Jordan Richardson was very proud of the work that Kemmer has put in over the past two years in New Tecumseth and the payoff it has yielded, “Phil has consistently been a top defenseman in the league and has shown the ability to play in any situation. Last season specifically Phil was asked to take on a role that involved him playing a higher number of minutes than usual and did so without hesitation because that’s what his team needed, he went out there and carried the load night in and night out for his team and I expect he will do the same for Maryville, while we would love to have Phil back for another 2 years we are extremely fortunate to have had him while we did and I wish him the best of luck as he makes the transition to the college game.”

Maryville will be making the jump from ACHA Division ll to Division l this year and will look to improve upon an 11-19 record in their inaugural season in the ACHA. Kemmer will be joining former teammate Matt Simoncelli who joined Maryville last season and was an Assistant Captain.

The 1998 born Kemmer reflected back on his time with New Tecumseth in the GMHL, “First of all I want to say thank you to the Civics organization for giving me the opportunity to live my dream and play in North America! I want to thank all of the great teammates I’ve had over the last 2 seasons and I want to thank Dennis for teaching me more about hockey than any other coach I’ve had before. I want to wish the returning civics players all the luck in the world for next season to bring home the Russel Cup! I’m super excited to go to the US and play university hockey which is another dream come true and to do it with an old teammate of mine in Simo is awesome! I want to keep being a leader and Maryville has a great program and they put a lot of effort in it so I’m excited to see what the future brings! Civic Nation will always be a part of me.”

Kemmer, who will be Majoring in Sports Business Management, will be part of a Saints team looking to compete this fall

From all of us in Civics Nation and the New Tecumseth Area we would like to thank you not only for what you did with the Civics for the past 2 seasons but for leaving a lasting impact on the community and the rest of your teammates, best of luck with your future Phil.
