Legion All-Star aces deal early, Bucs score late in 7-1 win

Led by aces Leland Wilson, Gage Webster and Jacob Gilbert, the Anchorage Legion Camp All-Stars held their own against the collegiate Anchorage Bucs in a 7-1 loss at Mulcahy Stadium.

The exhibition game has been played for more than two decades, but this year it was renamed to the Sladen Mohl Game in honor of the former South Legion Post 4 and Bucs player who died in April.

The Bucs retired Mohl’s No. 55 in a pregame ceremony. A No. 55 jersey was also featured in front of the Legion All-Stars’ dugout.

Wilson (West Post 1), Webster (South Post 4) and Gilbert (Wasilla Post 35) each threw scoreless frames over the second, third and fourth innings to keep it a 1-0 game.

The Bucs flexed their muscles with five runs in the fifth inning and another run in the sixth to build a 7-0 advantage.

The Legion All-Stars avoided the shutout by scoring a run in the seventh inning off former South player Brody Jessee, who is a relief pitcher for the Bucs this summer.

Chugiak Post 33’s Ian Friezelle doubled down the right-field line, stole third base and scored on Palmer Post 15’s Ben Alley’s RBI single to center.

Wasilla’s Carson Boyett started and brother Clayton Boyett finished. Other Legion pitchers included Chugiak’s Cam Costanios and South’s Reese Ivanoff.
