Date:  Source: New Jersey Jackals

The New Jersey Jackals defeated the Ottawa Champions by a score of 3-2 in the opening game of a double header. Game one was played in 7 innings.

The Jackals opened the scoring in the 2nd inning on a double off the bat of Chase Smart. The Jackals tacked on two more runs in the third with back-to-back hits from Alfredo Marte and Richard Stock. Ottawa starter Danny Garcia lasted 5 innings, giving up three runs, 0 earned, on 6 hits while waking one. Garcia struck out nine Jackals.

Jackals starter Anthony Fernandez cruised through four innings but surrendered a lead off home run off the bat of Ottawa DH Vincent Guglietti in the 5th. Fernandez struggled in the 5th, giving up three consecutive one-out hits after retiring Jordan Caillouet. Reece Karalus entered in the 5th and managed to escape the based loaded jam with one one run scoring on a fielders choice. Fernandez finished the game going 4.1 innings, giving up two earned runs on eight hits while walking none and striking out one.

The Jackals had their chance to extend the lead in the 5th when 2B Gregg Veneklasen reached base with a one out single. Veneklasen advanced to third on an infield single off the bat of Conrad Gregor but Alfredo Marte flew out to right field to strand runners on the corners.

After a scoreless 6th inning from Karalus, Dylan Brammer came on for the save. Brammer stranded Milik Collymore at second base after singling and stealing second. Brammer recorded his second save of the year. Karalus picked up his 3rd win of the season. Garcia suffered the loss, falling to 1-2 on the season.

Both the weather and the Ottawa Champions’ performance proved to be foggy on Wednesday night as the Jackals shut out Ottawa in the final game of their seven inning double header.

An error on Ottawa shortstop Malik Collymore opened up the game’s scoring by bringing in Jackals third baseman Emilio Gurrero in the bottom of the second. Gurrero continued to aid the Jackals by hitting a stand up double in the bottom of the fourth. Catcher Jason Agresti batted him home with an RBI single.

The Jackals showed their speed and lit up the board in the bottom of the 6th. Both Gurrero and right fielder Demetrius Moorer stole two bases a piece, including a scoring play by Gurrero when a passed ball allowed him to steal home. Left fielder Alfredo Marte brought in three more runs with a bases loaded double to right field.

The Jackals defense was rock solid, preventing the Champions from scoring any runs. Starting pitcher Eduard Reyes threw all seven innings tonight in 118 pitches. The final score of the team effort win tonight came out to 7-0.

The Jackals go for the sweep Thursday night at Yogi Berra Stadium at 7pm.
