Position: VP, Finance / Treasurer

Reports To: OJHL Chairman & OJHL Commissioner

Job Purpose 

To manage and report on the association's finances.  OJHL representative on OHA Finance Committee. 

Role of the Treasurer 

As the VP, Finance / Treasurer of the Ontario Junior Hockey League (the “OJHL”), the individual must have in-depth knowledge of the mission and programs of the league as well as its financial condition. The VP, Finance / Treasurer is responsible for all financial matters of the operations of the OJHL.  The VP, Finance / Treasurer bears special responsibility for ensuring that the league is financially sound and that its assets are being used effectively to meet its mission.   

Duties and Responsibilities 

Specific Responsibilities   

  • In consultation with the Commissioner and BOD, developing and monitoring the budget: ensures accurate accounts of income and expenditure; 
informing the Commissioner and BOD on a regular basis as to whether income and expense projections are turning out as predicted; takes a lead role in the preparation of the budget for the upcoming year; developing a balance sheet to assess the financial health of the association. 
  • Review with the Commissioner and Chairman all financial policies and procedures (including internal controls and investments) and ensure their compliance with local, provincial, and national regulations.  
  • Reports to the BOD and Board of Governors (the “BOG”) on finances: ensures the BOD receives monthly financial statements; once the auditor's financial report has been accepted by the BOD, the Treasurer prepares a report and presents it to the membership at the Annual General Meeting.  
  • Ensure that appropriate financial and organizational reports (e.g. CRA) are filed and available to the BOG in a timely manner.  
  • Maintains all bank accounts and oversees all financial transactions including bi-weekly payroll for all staff.  
  • Preparation of all accounts payables and receivables 
  • Chairs the Finance Committee.  
  • OJHL representative on the OHA Finance Committee 
  • Coordinate and review the annual audit and ensure that board members' questions are addressed; ensure that any adverse audit findings are addressed promptly.  

The assumption in this job description is that the VP, Finance / Treasurer takes a "hands-on" role with respect to the league. A hands-on VP, Finance / Treasurer should go through a monthly routine which would vary depending on the level of involvement. At the very least, a VP, Finance / Treasurer should meet with the Commissioner on a regular basis to review invoices and cheques, to review the bank statements, and to monitor the preparation of monthly statements for the BOD.

  • Provide assistance and advice to the Board and Staff on matters within their particular competence or experience.
