BURLINGTON WINS OJDL SEASON OPENER

The puck has dropped on the Ontario Junior Development League’s (OJDL) fifth season.

In the season opener, the Burlington Cougars defeated Georgetown 1 by a 6-3 count Sunday afternoon at Sixteen Mile Sports Complex in Oakville. Joel Chauvin had the hat trick for the Cougars.

Cobourg Cougars entries split the other two games. Both were played Monday.

Cobourg East downed Brampton 8-3 at Westwood Arena in Etobicoke. Noah Richard netted the hat trick for Cobourg. Teammates Gavyn Stevenson and Thomas Zechariah had two-goal games. Brampton’s Jeriah Schantz also had two goals.

In the other game, Matteo Dixon and Lee Chiang scored a pair apiece to lead the Toronto Patriots to a 6-4 win over Cobourg West at Westwood. Jacob Hiltz replied with two of his own for Cobourg West.

Play resumes Sunday night with two games at Campus Ice Centre in Oshawa.

Ten teams are playing in the OJDL during May and June. Games are being played in Oshawa, Etobicoke, Oakville and Brampton.

Teams playing in the 2019 OJDL are: the Collingwood Colts, Brampton Admirals, Toronto Patriots, Whitby Fury, Oakville Blades, Burlington Cougars and two squads each from the Cobourg Cougars – Cobourg East and West – and Georgetown Raiders – Raiders 1 and 2.

Each team will play two games during the OJDL Showcase at Campus Ice Centre in Oshawa June 1 and 2. College Hockey Inc., will conduct a seminar for all OJDL players during the Showcase.

College Hockey Inc. works with NCAA Division I men's college hockey to raise the sport's profile and to encourage elite young players to pursue a college hockey career.

The league is run by the Ontario Junior Hockey League.

College Hockey Inc. is as a new major sponsor of the OJDL. Other sponsors include, ClifBar and Barn Burner Hockey.

From the 2018 OJDL teams, 84 players made OJHL teams or teams in other junior hockey leagues.
