Day 3 Recap: Men’s D-I National Championships

Day three of the ACHA Men’s Division I National Championships started out with four-time ACHA National Champion runner-up Iowa State University shutting out Stony Brook University 4-0 in the morning game at Comerica Center Saturday. Netminder Matt Goedeke stopped all 26 shots on goal as Jackson Graalum and Trevor Sabo each garnered multiple-point performances. Graalum led Iowa State with two goals and Sabo tallied a pair of assists.   [ Box Score ]

Iowa State (#5) advances to the Elite Eight and will face Ohio (#4) Sunday at 10 a.m. Central at the Comerica Center.

 

Game 2 of Day 3 had the 2013 ACHA Men’s D-I Champion Minot State University defeat University of Illinois 5-3 at the Comerica Center. With Minot State having 12 players tally at least a point in the game, the Beavers had a commanding 3-0 lead midway in the game.  Illinois would score once before the second period ended and then two more to come within one before Minot’s Shain Scheschuk scored an empty-netter.   [ Box Score ]

Minot State (#6) will face Adrian College (#3) Sunday at 1:30 p.m. CT.

 

Game 3 of Day 3 saw Davenport University dominate University of Central Oklahoma 8-3 at the Comerica Center.  Nathaniel Nickelson tallied three points (1G+2A) and Alex Hulford scored a pair of goals to lead Davenport to the Elite Eight.  Davenport jumped out early scoring five goals off five shots in the opening frame before Central Oklahoma’s Grayden Hohl put the Bronchos on the board. Davenport would extend their lead to 7-2 after two periods before each team traded goals in the final frame.  [ Box Score ]

Davenport University (#7) will face University of Michigan-Dearborn (#10) Sunday at 5 p.m. CT

 

The final game of Day 3 saw Liberty University defeat University of Arizona 7-2 Saturday at Comerica Center.  Liberty’s Jacob Fricks led the Flames with three points (1G+2A) and was one of seven different scorers for the evening. Arizona struck first and early, scoring just 1:18 into the game before Liberty answered back midway in the opening period. The Flames would capitalize on an Arizona five-minute boarding major and game disqualification scoring three goals in the second period and another trio of goals in the third. Arizona made it a 7-2 game with a shorthanded, unassisted goal with less than three minutes remaining.   [ Box Score ]

Liberty University (#8) will face Lindenwood (#1) Sunday at 8:30 p.m. CT.
