2/8/2019: Slippery Rock University vs Toledo Game 1

Over the weekend the Slippery Rock University Men’s Club Ice Hockey Team traveled to Toledo Ohio for a two-game road series.

The puck drop on Friday was 7:00 p.m. at Team Toledo Ice House. The two teams started out by feeling how one another was playing in the first period. Karson Frisk scored the first goal of the game at 12:40 when Slippery Rock was shorthanded. Slippery Rock played most of the first period shorthanded due to their three penalties to Toledo’s one penalty. This lead to an unusual period where The Rock was outshot seventeen to seven but had the lead.

Through one period of play, SRU 1- Toledo 0

After the slow first period, things started to pick up that would set the tone for the entire weekend. The refs made a few questionable calls. This led to the game to start getting out of hand. Toledo came in with a plan to play physical and challenge SRU’s top players throughout the game. The hitting intensity increased for both teams in the second. During the period Slippery Rock and Toledo combined for thirteen total penalties. The biggest penalty of the game came at 16:37 when Shane Riley and Toledo’s M. Geckler would get majors for fighting. Shane left the game with seventeen penalty minutes and an ejection meaning he cannot play in the next game for Slippery Rock. There were five goals in the period by K. Frisk, T. Kimmick, N. Mettenburg for SRU and two for Toledo by S. Hughes, and A. Felser.

After two periods, SRU 4- Toledo 2

In the third, we saw things start to cool down as Slippery Rock started to take control and play strong defense. With the third period being the best period for Slippery Rock all year they showed once again how they can close games out. A. Felser scored his second goal of the game at 9:47. Though SRU kept their composure and T. Kimmick scored an empty netter at 19:20.

2/9/2019 Slippery Rock University vs Toledo Game 2

Puck drop was 5:30 p.m and just like the night before this game started out slow and the intensity would grow as the game continued. Toledo started goalie T. Fausnaugh again, who faced forty-one shots the night before. With this unique strategy, Toledo was going to rely on a limited amount of players that had just played the night before. Toledo outshot Slippery Rock eighteen shots to ten the period. The only difference this time through was T. Snyder scored at 15:12 for Toledo. T. Kimmick then got the equalizer at 16:28.

End of the second period SRU 4- Toledo 2

Heading into the third-period SRU just needed to keep their composure for twenty more minutes and they would walk away with the win. For a weekend that has seen a ton of chippiness and good ole grinding hockey, there were a whopping fourteen combined penalties in the third period! There was so much madness in the third period that the refs halted play at 11:28 and spent ten minutes just trying to figure out what penalties were committed after a scrum. I. Rapp scored at 2:59. A. Procaccini scored the game-tying goal at 12: 53.  With no more goals scored in the period, it meant we were going to over time. The tension in the arena was thick and both teams looking at claiming the win.

End of regulation SRU 4- Toledo 4

According to ACHA guidelines, we would have a five minute OT period of three on three hockey until one team scores. Luckily for SRU, the OT period lasted only thirty seconds in their favor. Jamie Mauro Slippery Rock University leading goal scorer scored thirty seconds into OT breaking Wes Waldschmidt all-time point record with his sixty-eighth point on the year!!!

SRU wins 5-4 in OT

SRU K. Belanger 46 shots, 42 saves

Toledo T. Fausnaugh 38 shots, 33 saves

After a wild weekend that extreme highs of Jamie Mauro record-breaking 68th point this season and Trevor Pfiel first career goal! There was also the extreme low of a whopping forty-one offenses for 137 penalty minutes. These two games will come to define the Slippery Rock University Men’s Ice Hockey Club team and all their grittiness. Since the beginning of the year, the boys have become brothers in arms willing to go to battle with each other every week as they march towards playoffs. Join us next week as SRU travels to take on their despised rivals IUP on Thursday, February 14th 7:10 p.m
