Men’s D-II Ranking, No. 7

January 17, 2019

Northeast
The first ranking since the Holiday Break in December brought very little change to the seventh ranking of the season for the Northeast.  There were only two games played involving teams in the Northeast.  Clarkson beat Union 6-5 and Army beat Central Connecticut 4-3. The top 11 teams remain the same in this week’s rankings.  Next week will be the first games back for most teams in the Northeast.

Central
The first ranking of the second semester saw Trine University taking over the No. 2 spot, pushing Marian University down to No. 3.  This is the first time this season that Marian has not held one of the two top spots in the Central Region.  Davenport University jumped 8 spots this week, on the strength of their 3-0 weekend at the Miami Showcase.  The Panthers defeated Rowan (#9, SE), Penn State (#2, SE) and FGCU (#1, SE). The battle for the No. 9 and No. 10 spots continues to be fluid as Minnesota and Saint Thomas, moved back into the Top 10 after falling to No. 11 and No. 13, respectively.  Wisconsin-Eau Claire also returns to the Rankings, coming in at No. 19.

Southeast
The Southeast Region saw little movement in this ranking, with most teams not having started back up after the break.  A showcase in Lynchburg this weekend could have an impact for several teams as Liberty and Cincinnati will be looking to further solidify their hold on the top two regional spots and Maryland will be looking to get an upset to get back in the race for the No. 10 seed.  With the potential for a wild card spot in the Regionals still in play, No. 11 Ohio State and No. 12 Louisville will have a two-game series this weekend to try to position themselves for the stretch run.

West
The West Region has been a busy place for the last two weeks.  The largest move in the rankings has been Denver to No. 14, from No. 20, with wins over Colorado State and second-ranked Northern Colorado.  They also lost 4-3 to top seed University of Mary.  Grand Canyon (No. 6) moved up two spots with wins over No. 30 Arizona State this past weekend but got some help from No. 10 Montana State who beat No. 8 Williston 8-5 and then lost a close game the next night, 6-5, in overtime.  Utah State (No. 18) fell five spots after losing a pair of games to No. 13 BYU over the last two weeks.  Coming this weekend, 14 western teams will battle in the Big Mountain Conference Classic
in the Denver area over a five-day span (Jan. 17-21).
