DRESDEN – One thing you can’t do is give the Provincial Junior Hockey League’s Stobbs Division second-place Dresden Kings eight powerplays in a game.

The sixth-place Blenheim Blades visited the Kings in Dresden Friday night, and got off to a great 3-1 start by 15:37 of the first period on two goals by Drew Marlatt and one from Will Tetzlaff.

Then it was downhill from there as the Kings scored seven straight times for an 8-3 victory before 324 fans at the Ken Houston arena.

The win gives the Kings 54 points, while the Blades remain at 34, three behind the fifth-place Mooretown Flags heading into Saturday’s 5 p.m. outdoor game against the seventh-place Wheatley Sharks at Lanspeary Park in Windsor.

Both Mooretown and Blenheim have five games remaining, while the Sharks, at 28 points, have seven.

The Kings ended up scoring three powerplay goals; the first by Greg Hay to tie things at 1-1 in the first period, and the others by Eric Carter and Kenny Chisholm.

The other five Dresden goals came off the sticks of Elijah Duquette (two), and Brendan Ritchie, T.J. Saundy and Nolan VandenBoorn.

Marlatt’s goals were his eighth and ninth of the year, with his second coming on a powerplay, while Tetzlaff’s fifth was also on a Blades man-advantage.

Defenceman Bailey Smith picked up two assists, with singles going to Kier Cumming, Dede Cato, and Malcolm Campbell.

The Kings outshot the Blades 52-29.

Tyler Letchford was between the pipes for Blenheim.

BLADES BITS: The Blades were missing defencemen Sebastian Stubberfield and newly resigned Steven Funk due to injuries, as well as high-scoring rookie forward Cam Symons, who was sitting out the first of a two-game suspension…Funk re-signed with the team Thursday and has played only nine games so far this season due to a lower body injury…After Saturday’s outdoor game, which will be the fifth in eight days for the Blades, the team will not play again until a week from Sunday when the Petrolia Flyers come to town.
