The Waterloo Siskins were the better team for most of the match against the Cambridge Redhawks Sunday at the Waterloo Memorial Recreation Centre. Waterloo outshot Cambridge 43-35 during the game that went to double overtime before a winner was declared however a few untimely penalties and some very timely saves by the Cambridge netminder left Waterloo shaking their heads in frustration.

Waterloo opened the scoring at 10:27 of the first frame with a beautiful power play goal featuring a great pass from Siskins OWEN LANE to SAM CHERRY for the finish. Siskins SAM SPAEDT scored a few minutes later with an even strength marker and the Siskins looked well on their way with a 2-0 lead after the first period. The Siskins continued to dominate the game into the second period outshooting Cambridge by double at one point late in the period however the Cambridge goaltenders kept the game close. Waterloo took a 3-0 lead late in the second period when BRETT SCHAEFER converted a great feed from JACK CHUMLEY at 14:07 of the second period. Cambridge came right back and scored to make it 3-1 however when 16 year old BEN McFARLANE was the benefactor of a bad Siskins turnover in front of Siskins netminder MATT ONUSKA.  Cambridge made the score 3-2 early in the second period with a “seeing eye” shot that eluded the Siskins netminder through a screen.

The game changer came at 13:38 of the third period when Siskins forward DANNY TSIAMPAS appeared to not hear an offside whistle and rip a shot off the cross bar much to the chagrin of the Cambridge netminder who charged out after the Siskins forward (See Photo #2 of Nov 11, 2018 Album - Cambridge netminder TANNER WICKWARE grabs Siskins forward DANNY TSIAMPAS behind the Cambridge net). Waterloo was assessed an extra minor penalty for unsportsmanlike conduct on the play which lead to the Redhawks tying the game on the power play with BEN McFARLANE notching his second marker of the game.

The overtime saw Waterloo getting most of the great scoring chances but they couldn’t find the back of the net. Cambridge forward BEN McFARLANE came close to ending the game on a breakaway in the second overtime period (See Photo #3 of Nov 11, 2018 Album - McFarlane gets iron instead of mesh while MATT ONUSKA sighs in relief) however it took a questionable penalty in the second overtime period to lead to the Cambridge winning goal-yet again on the power play with 38 seconds remaining .

Waterloo brings its 11-6-0-2 record to the Waterloo Memorial Recreation Centre Sunday at 1:30 against cross town rival Kitchener Dutchmen. The Waterloo Siskins organization is supporting a CHRISTMAS toy drive in conjunction with the Knights of Columbus and hope to see you there Sunday toys in hand.
