GMU took only six minutes to score its first goal on Friday night, and by the end of the weekend, it had racked up 17 goals and two wins.

In Friday night’s division match against the University of Maryland, seven different players scored in the 13-0 victory.

The game was outstanding for more than the score. Cameron Smith led the team with a hat trick – his fourth of the season – plus an extra goal and four assists. Transfer student Alex DeYoung scored his first goal as a Patriot on a power play 17 seconds into the third period. Twelve minutes later, he was credited with his first assist. In addition, sophomore goalie Nate George made 25 saves for his first career shutout.

Trevor Mack, Tyler D’Agostino and Ryan Johnson scored two goals each. Collin Henley scored his first goal of the season, and Jacob Lechner scored Mason’s last goal unassisted.

On Sunday, Mason faced D-II University of Virginia for the first time. The game turned out to be a nail-biter, but Mason was able to pull out the win in overtime, 4-3.

Matthew Rosenberger opened the scoring late in the first period with a power play goal, the only time Mason was able to take advantage of six power plays UVA gave up in that period.

Smith followed up by scoring on the only power play of the second period, then added another goal at even strength.

But UVA fought back hard in the third period. The Cavaliers scored three unanswered goals – including on two of their three power plays – and tied the game with only two minutes left, sending the game into overtime. In just 34 seconds, UVA was called for hooking, giving Mason a one-man advantage. Smith cashed in 30 seconds later, completing his second hat trick in as many games.

Mason's next home game is a charity match against Penn State-Altoona on Dec. 2 at 3:50 PM, which can be streamed live from Monumental Network here!
