November 10, 2018 – Sault College Cougars ACHA Division 3 (9-1-1-0) vs. Michigan Tech University Huskies ACHA Division 2  (4-6-2-0)

 

Huskies win 4-2 with an empty net goal. Just coming off the news of being ranked #2 in the D3 North Division of the ACHA, the Cougars faced off against the D2 Huskies at Dee Stadium in Houghton Michigan. The first period was scoreless with each team not giving the other much room to get on the scoreboard.  The shots during the first period were even at 13.

 

The start of the second was strong for the Huskies resulting in a goal at the 19:39 mark where Dylan Boberg lifted a high shot from the slot on Cougar’s goalie Drew Gregory.  Wyatt Conrow added a goal at the 11:28 mark to put the huskies up 2-0.  Andrew Barbeau was able to get the Cougars on the scoreboard 3 minutes later with a shot from the point getting past Huskies netminder Drew Eaton.  The shots during the second period were even at 15.

 

With the Cougars down by one goal in the 3rd period, Max Khull was able to tie the game at the 14:35 mark.  The Cougars weren’t able to capitalize on their opportunities in the third and then allowed Nick Aird to regain the lead at the 8:51 mark.  Nick Balavich managed to steal the puck at the Huskies blue line and skate in for a final empty net goal to finish the game at 4-2.  The shots during the third period were 12-10 for the Huskies.

November 11, 2018 – Sault College Cougars ACHA Division 3 (9-2-1-0) vs. Michigan Tech University Huskies ACHA Division 2  (5-6-2-0)

 

Cougars win 8-4. Coming off a loss to Michigan Tech’s ACHA D2 team on November 10th, the Cougars were looking for a better result in game 2 of the weekend. The first 20 minutes was evenly played by both teams until Brad Thrower from the Cougars opened up the scoring at the 7:22 mark and Max Khull finishing the period adding a second marker with 25 seconds remaining.  Shots during the first period were 20 to 12 in favour of the Cougars.

 

The second period gave the Cougars some additional security to their lead by adding 4 goals from Austin Rowe, Jason Uhl and Andrew Barbeau (2).  Shots during the second period were 17-7 in favour of the Cougars.

 

With the Cougars up by six goals going into the 3rd period, the Huskies rallied back with 4 goals to cut the Cougars lead to 6-4 near the end of the game.  The Cougars were able to add 2 additional goals to double up the Huskies with an 8-4 win.  Shots during the third period were 20-10 for the Cougars.

The Cougars are now 10-2-1-0 heading into the 2nd week of ACHA rankings.  Next action for the Cougars is November 16 & 17 against Oakland University who lost to Hope College in the 2017/18 national championship game.
