The Rock drops two to Kent State

Game One: Slippery Rock @ Kent State  

Friday, November 2nd, Slippery Rock traveled to Kent State University.  Slippery Rock is coming off another two-win weekend series against John Carroll and Mercyhurst University.

Minutes into the period, Kent State struck first. Justin Bioni scored the game’s opening goal. On the Bioni’s goal, Jake Parry and Nathaniel Schwartz picked up the assist. Two minutes later, the Golden Flashes found the back of the net again. This time it was Sean Moore on the goal and picking up the only assist was Jon Buttitta. Halfway through the first period is when Slippery Rock found the net. It was when Tommy Kimmick put the puck in the net while being assisted by Antonio Esposito and Jamie Mauro. Shortly after the Slippery Rock goal, Kent State’s Moore found the back of the net again, this time being assisted by Xavier Sudlow and Jon Buttitta. To end the first period, it was Kent State 3- Slipper Rock 1.

The second period was a very well period of hockey as only one goal was scored. The goal was credited to Kent State’s Lucas Ethington. Ethington was assisted by Moore and Dylan Anderson.

To start the third, Slippery Rock was down 4-1. Similar to the second period of play, both teams play quality hockey as the back of the net was hard to be found. Only one goal was scored in the period, and it was Slippery Rock’s Esposito. On the Esposito goal, Mauro and Kimmick picked up the assist. The final score was 4-2 as Kent State took the first game. Tomorrow’s game will be played at the Lemieux Center, and it where Slippery Rock will look for redemption.

Game Two: Slippery Rock vs Kent State

Saturday, November 3rd, Slippery Rock hosted Kent State where they will try and draw even on the series.

Minutes into the game, Slippery Rock scored first. Karson Frisk scored the go-ahead goal and was assisted by Jason Haines. After the early goal, scoring was hard to come by for both teams. With two minutes left in the period, Kent State tied the game. Jon Buttitta scored an unassisted goal. Seconds later, the Golden Flashes scored again. The goal was scored by Xavier Sudlow and was assisted by Buttitta and Sean Moore. Ending the first period, Kent State was up by one goal.

The second period was underway, and Slippery Rock’s Shane Riley scored the equalizer. On the power-play goal, Nate Mettenburg and Christian Miller picked up the assists. Less than a minute later, Slippery Rock was back on the power-play. This time Jon Seibert scored the goal that gave Slippery Rock the lead. Seibert was assisted by Tommy Kimmick. The lead didn’t last for long as Kent State drew even again. Rob Ferrari was the goal scorer and was assisted by Jake Parry and Buttitta. After two periods of play the game was even with a score of 3-3.

Minutes into the third period, Kent State retook the lead. Shane Handlavich scored the goal and picking up the lone assist was Jason Smith. Three minutes later, we were tied again. Jason Haines found the back of the net on an incredible angle. Haines was assisted by Mike McCann. With 7:40 remaining in the game, Kent State took the lead. Buttitta scored the game winning goal and was assisted by Sudlow and Moore. The final score was 5-4 in favor of Kent State.

Next weekend Slippery Rock will play Canisius College and Duquesne University. Both games will be played at the Lemieux center.
