Game One: Slippery Rock vs. John Carroll

Friday, October 26th, the University of John Carroll traveled to Cranberry Pennsylvania to take on Slippery Rock. Slippery Rock is coming off a weekend series against Townson where they took both games.

The puck was dropped around 10:00 P.M, and its where John Carroll took the early lead. With 8:44 remaining in the first period, Grant MacMillan scored a power-play goal that was assisted by John MaMahon. John Carroll did not enjoy the lead for long, as Slippery Rock’s Nate Mettenburg scored an unassisted goal to draw even. The first period was a well-played period as both teams were physical throughout.

The second period was exactly like the first, John Carroll scored the go-ahead goal with 8:56 remaining in the period. The goal was scored by Jim Grable and was assisted by Evan Krugger and Beau Rossbach. Once again, the John Carroll lead wasn’t long as Karson Frisk scored the equalizer. On the Frisk goal, Jake Hickey and Jason Haines picked up the assists. Another physical period of hockey was played, as the score was tied at 2-2.

When the third period started, you could tell Slippery Rock was determined to score the next goal. Antonio Esposito scored the leading goal with 11:47 remaining in the game. Tommy Kimmick and Jamie Mauro picked up the assists on the go-ahead goal. John Carroll was able to retaliate as two minutes later Max Wopperer scored the game tying goal. Wopperer was assisted by Rossbach. With less than five minutes in the game Slippery Rock’s Josh Scott found the back of the net. John Seibert and Nate Mettenburg were able to find an open Scott for the leading goal. Jamie Mauro sealed the victory for Slippery Rock, as he scored an empty net goal with 43 seconds remaining in the game. The final score was Slippery Rock 5- John Carroll 3.

Slippery Rock travels to Mercyhurst University tomorrow to take on the Lakers.

Game Two: Slippery Rock @ Mercyhurst University

Saturday, October 27th  Slippery Rock traveled to Erie Pennsylvania to take on Mercyhurst University.

Ten minutes into the game is when the first goal was scored. Slippery Rock’s Jamie Mauro scored the goal and was assisted by Tommy Kimmick. Seven minutes later, Mauro found the back of the net again. Shane Riley was credited with the assist. Great defense and goal keeping by Slippery Rock lead to a 2-0 after one period of play.

Period two was off to a fast start to Slippery Rock as it looks like they haven’t slowed down. The first goal of the second period was scored with 17 minutes left in the period. Christian Miller scored a power-play goal and was assisted by Luke Grossman and Robert Swinderman. Moments later, Jamie Mauro scored his third goal to complete another hattrick on the season. Mauro was unassisted on the play. Less than a minute later, Mercyhurst was on the board with a power-play goal by Decosse. Decosse was assisted by Bevilacqua and Frye. After two periods of play Slippery Rock lead with a score of 5-1.

Slippery Rock came out strong again, scoring four minutes in was Tommy Kimmick. On the Kimmick goal, he was assisted by Mike McCann. The final goal of the game was scored by Jason Haines and he was assisted by Karson Frisk. Slippery Rock’s dominance throughout the game lead to a 7-1 victory, as their win streak continues to grow.

Next weekend Slippery Rock will play Kent State with each team getting a chance at home ice. November 2nd SRU will be @ Kent State, while on November 3rd SRU will host Kent State at the Lemieux Center.
