On October 20th, Slippery Rock’s Men Club Hockey Team traveled to Towon University to take on the Tigers for a handful of games.
Game one took place on Saturday, October 20 and it is where Slippery Rock jumped to an early lead and never looked back. Jamie Mauro opened the gates as he scored the first two goals of the game. Mauro’s first goal was a power-play goal, scored with 16:22 remaining in the first period. Shane Riley and Tommy Kimmick added themselves to the score sheet where they picked up the assists on the goal. Jamie’s second goal was with 6:31 left, and he was assisted by Tommy Kimmick. That wasn’t the end for Slippery Rock’s offense in the first period as they added three more goals before time expired. Shane Riley added to the growing lead as he scored with 5:34 left in the first. On the Riley goal, Tommy Kimmick and Christian Miller earned the assists. Jake Hickey was added to the goal column when he was assisted by Sean Patt. To end the first period, Mauro scored his third goal to complete the hat-trick. Mauro was assisted by Antonio Esposito which lead to a 5-0 SRU lead.
Slow start for both teams to start the second period. Slippery Rock had five penalties while Towson had one of their own. The first goal of the period was scored by Slippery Rock’s Antonio Esposito. Esposito’s goal was an un-assisted power-play goal with 10:29 remaining in the period. Kenny Wong broke the silence for Towson, as he scored with 7:21 left in the second. On the Wong goal, Nate Dailey was credited with the assist. As the horn rang, Slippery Rock lead with a score of 6-1 with one period remaining in the game.
Similar start to the third period for both teams as Towson accounted for three of the four penalties in the period. Slippery Rock’s only goal of the third period was scored by no other than Jamie Mauro. Mauro was assisted by Kimmick and Esposito. The final score of the game was Slippery Rock 7- Towson 1. Sunday, October 21st is when Slippery Rock University took on the Tigers of Towson for game number two of the weekend series. Slippery Rock will try and repeat what they did in game one as they went on to win with a final score of 7-1.
Slippery Rock came out to an even faster start in game two, scoring 14 seconds into the game was Nate Mettenburg. Mettenburg was set up by Josh Scott for the early goal. Towson retaliated to the early Rock goal, by scoring a power-play goal from Simon Gosselin. Colin Hayward was able to find Gosselin for the equalizer. The game wasn’t tired for long, as Towson scored their second goal of the game minutes after their first one. The Tiger goal was a short-handed goal scored by Nate Dailey who was assisted by Collin Mercui. Towson couldn’t enjoy their lead for long, as Tommy Kimmick put the puck in the back of the net for Slippery Rock. On the Kimmick goal, Jamie Mauro picked up the assist. Kimmick’s goal really sparked Slippery Rock as they scored three more goals to close out the first period. Sean Patt, Tommy Kimmick, and Antonio Esposito where the goal scorers. On the last three goals of the period, Esposito, Mauro and Mettenburg were tailed with the assists. The first period was a rather sloppy period as both teams received five penalties. After one period of play, Slippery Rock led Towson with a score of 5-2.
Just like the first period, Slippery Rock found the back of the net within minutes. With 16:13 remaining in the second period, Mauro was the first to get the scoring going with a power-play goal. Assisting on the goal was Tommy Kimmick. After the Mauro goal, Antonio Esposito was the next to find the back of the net. Assisting on the Esposito goal was John Seibert and Michael McCann. Tommy Kimmick then scored the next two goals of the period to complete his quest for the hat-trick. His first goal was with 12:53 remaining and was assisted by Mauro and Esposito. Kimmick’s second goal of the period was assisted by Karson Frisk and Jason Haines. With 1:59 remaining in the period, Mauro scored the last goal of the game. After the conclusion of the 2nd period, Slippery Rock lead 10-2. Both teams still had a tough time staying out of the “sin bin”, as four power-play opportunities were given to both teams.
The third period was rather quite on both sides, except for the penalty box. Towson was penalized four times, while Slippery Rock made one appearance in the box. Jon Szynalski was in goal for Slippery Rock and he saved 27 of his 29 shots.
Slippery Rock will be home on Friday, October 26, at the UPMC Lemieux Center. The Rock will take on John Carroll as they hope to keep their win streak alive.
