Adrian College Sweeps Bama, Remains No. 1 in Men's D-I Ranking

UNION LAKE, Mich. – (October 24, 2018) – Adrian College, the defending Men's Division I National Champions of the American Collegiate Hockey Association, received 24 out of 30 first-place votes in the final coaches poll to maintain the top spot in the 2018-2019 ACHA Men's Division I Ranking, No. 4. 

 

The Bulldogs rolled tide over Alabama in the friendly confines of Arrington Arena in Adrian, Mich. (8-1, 10-2) to remain undefeated at 6-0-0, but should face a stiff test this weekend as they square off against No. 5 Liberty University at home.  Lindenwood University held the No. 2 spot after a non-league home sweep over the University of Oklahoma.  The Lions handed the Sooners its first two regulation losses of the season (5-3, 8-1) to improve to 8-0-0 on the season.  Ohio University (7-1-0) held in the No. 3 spot this week after splitting on the road with Iowa State University in a Central States Collegiate Hockey League matchup. Ohio prevailed 4-1 on Friday before the Cyclones saddled the Bobcats with their first loss of the season 5-3 on Saturday night in Ames, Iowa.  The University of Illinois remained at No. 4 after sweeping the University of Central Oklahoma on the Big Pond in Champaign, Ill.  The Fighting Illini were able to squeak out the win on Friday night in an overtime shootout (3-2, 1-0 SO) before finishing off the Bronchos on Saturday with a 4-2 win.  Rounding out the Top 5 was Liberty University.  The Flames swept New York University (7-3, 5-0) at the LaHaye Center in Lynchburg, Va. in a pair of Eastern States Collegiate Hockey League games, improving to 7-0-1 on the season.

 

The Eastern States Collegiate Hockey League (6) and the Central States Collegiate Hockey League (5) lead the way with all of its member teams ranked, while the Western Collegiate Hockey League has five (of 8) of its member teams ranked, and the Great Lakes Collegiate Hockey League has three (of 8) of its member teams ranked.

 

Over the past 16 seasons, 12 different schools have won the ACHA Men's Division I National Championship: Lindenwood (3), Central Oklahoma (2), Illinois (2), Adrian, Arizona State, Davenport, Delaware, Minot State, Oakland, Ohio, Penn State, and Rhode Island.

 

Entering its 28th season of action, there have been a total of 14 schools that have won the ACHA Men's Division I National Championship:

  • Lindenwood (3)
  • Central Oklahoma (2)
  • Illinois (2)
  • North Dakota State (2)
  • Adrian
  • Arizona State
  • Davenport
  • Delaware
  • Iowa State
  • Minot State

  • Rhode Island

 

A total of 60 teams will compete in Men’s Division I this season, including two new teams: the University of Toledo and William Paterson University. The two teams departing Men’s Division 1 include Midland University and Saint Bonaventure University.

 

The computer ranking, which will not commence until the week of November 1, will for the sixth time determine the 20 teams that qualify for the 2019 ACHA Men's Division I National Championships, which will include the following six autobids:

 

  • (CHMA) College Hockey Mid-America (PLAYOFF CHAMPION)
  • (ECHA) Eastern Collegiate Hockey Association (REGULAR SEASON CHAMPION)
  • (ESCHL) Eastern States Collegiate Hockey League (REGULAR SEASON CHAMPION)
  • (GLCHL) Great Lakes Collegiate Hockey League (REGULAR SEASON CHAMPION)
  • (NECHL) Northeast Collegiate Hockey League (PLAYOFF CHAMPION)
  • (WCHL) Western Collegiate Hockey League (REGULAR SEASON CHAMPION)

 

The fifth ranking of the regular season will be released on Wednesday, October 31, 2018, as the ranking system switches to a computer poll from a coaches poll.

 

The 2019 ACHA Men's Division I National Championships will be hosted March 21-26 for the first time by the Dallas Sports Commission, Dallas Stars, and Dr Pepper StarCenters at the Dr Pepper Arena, in Frisco, TX. This will be the eighth year of the 20-team format.
