The Havoc (1-1-0) split their opening games, dropping a close season opener against the Birmingham Bulls rivals before doubling up the Evansville Thunderbolts on Saturday.

Week Recap

Havoc Fall to Bulls 5-4

Huntsville kicked off their season opener on Friday night against their in-state rivals. The Havoc faced the Bulls on Friday, October 19, in the Pelham Civic Complex. The Havoc had a slow start, allowing the Bulls to score two goals early in the first period. The Havoc answered with Zach Nieminen finally putting one in the back of the net, however, the Bulls replied with another goal, ending the first period with a 3-1 lead.

The Havoc started the second with a power play goal from Stephen Hrehoriak, narrowing the Bulls lead. With less than two minutes remaining in the period, the Bulls regained their two-score lead with a questionable goal. Inconclusive video footage from the game shows what may or may not be a save by Huntsville’s Mike DeLaVergne, but the call stood and the second period ended with the Bulls up 4-2.

Returning center Sy Nutkevitch started the third period by putting one on the board, bringing the Havoc within one goal of overturning the Bulls. Birmingham once again responded by slipping one past DeLaVergne. With 3:15 left in the game, Havoc Head Coach Glenn Detulleo pulled the netminder in exchange for an extra attacker. A late penalty by Birmingham gave the Havoc a 6-4 player advantage. The Havoc soon scored to close the gap, but the Havoc could not complete the comeback and dropped a close one 5-4.

Redemption in Evansville 6-3

The Havoc continued their road trip by heading to Evansville, Indiana, to square up against the Thunderbolts. The Havoc started the game with a quick goal by Colton Wolter. The Thunderbolts soon tied it up, ending the first period knotted at a goal each.

Just a minute into the second period, the Thunderbolts scored on a rebound to take a 2-1 lead. Ready for redemption, the Havoc retaliated by scoring two goals 10 seconds apart from Zach Nieminen and Rob Darrar, putting the visitors back on top with a 3-2 lead. Nolan Kaiser scored an unassisted power play goal later in the period and the Havoc went to the break with a 4-2 lead.

Huntsville began the third period with a power play goal from Connor Schmidt to take a three-goal lead. The Thunderbolts struck back with a goal later in the period, but Huntsville locked down Evansville as Darrar scored his second of the game to help the Havoc secure their first win of the season, 6-3.

Versus Pensacola

The Havoc and Ice Flyers last met on Feb. 10, 2018. The game went into a shootout, where the Havoc came out on top, 5-4. Retired Havoc defenseman and now assistant coach Stuart Stefan scored the winning shootout goal.

Pensacola comes into the game with a 1-1-0 record. They won their first game on the road against the Macon Mayhem. The game went into a shootout where the Ice Flyers earned a hard-fought 4-3 win.

Like the Havoc, the Ice Flyers saw their first loss of the season against the Birmingham Bulls. In the team’s home opener, Pensacola battled with the Bulls in an eventful game which included a few fighting majors and 22 penalty minutes in the first period alone. The Ice Flyers ultimately fell to the Bulls 3-2.
