EVANSVILLE, INDIANA – After an opening night loss, the Huntsville Havoc bounced back strong with a 6-3 victory on the road against the Evansville Thunderbolts on Saturday, October 20.
The special teams were a major highlight for the Havoc (1-1-0) as they scored three powerplay goals on four opportunities and shut down Evansville (0-2-0) during the two powerplay chances for the Thunderbolts.
"I thought we recovered very well from last night’s skate,” said Havoc Head Coach Glenn Detulleo. “Our special teams were very strong, and it was good to see the young guys chip in.”
All but one of Huntsville’s scores were from players new to the roster.
Havoc rookie forward Colton Wolter got things rolling for the Havoc in the first period, scoring his first professional goal in the first three minutes. The Bolts matched the score about ten minutes later and -- after the first intermission -- even took a brief lead when former Huntsville player Carter Shinkaruk scored less than a minute into the second period.
The visiting team responded by scoring four unanswered goals and taking control of the game. Barely a minute after Evansville took the lead, Huntsville’s Zach Nieminen and Rob Darrar scored unassisted tallys just ten seconds apart to take it back. Defensive leader Nolan Kaiser recorded another unassisted goal later in the second – this time on the powerplay – to put the Havoc on top 4-2.
Huntsville’s Connor Schmidt continued the onslaught in the third frame, scoring his own powerplay goal just two minutes into the period before Evansville’s Shinkaruk broke through with his second goal of the night. Darrar capped the scoring with another powerplay goal with 90 seconds left in the game.
Havoc goalkeeper Mike DeLaVergne stopped 31 of the 34 shots he faced to secure the win. Newcomer Hunter Stewart notched two assists. In fact, nine different Havoc recorded points for the visiting team.
