In a three-game series that took seven days to complete, extra innings were required before the Charlottesville Tom Sox finally advanced to the South finals with a 3-2 win over Waynesboro.

Charlottesville trailed 2-1 in the bottom of the ninth, but Nick Bellafronto and Alex Mardiney singled before Garrett Jones’ RBI single sent the game intro extras.

Max Bazin drew a walk in the bottom of the 11th and the bases were soon loaded with two outs. Kirby McMullen was hit by a pitch for the walkoff victory.

The Tom Sox now travel to Covington (who has been waiting since a 2-1 win over the Turks on Monday) tomorrow night for a one-game South final at 7 p.m. The winner will play New Market in a best-of-three championship series beginning Monday at the site of the South Division victor.

The visiting Generals had struck first, in the top of the third inning. Nathan Schneider’s RBI single in the fourth inning made it 2-0 before C’ville reliever Hunter Gregory got out of a bases loaded jam to prevent further damage.

Bellafronto answered right back for the Tom Sox, with an RBI single to plate Will Allocca in the bottom of the fourth.

Gregory kept it a one-run game with a pair of strikeouts in the sixth and two K’s to end the seventh with a pair of Generals on base.

Gregory struck out five in 3.2 shutout innings. Another Tom Sox reliever, Antonio Menendez, had four K’s in two key hitless innings.
