ELKVILLE, Ill. - In conjunction with Pointstreak and Stack Sports, the Prospect League is pleased to announce Derek Martin (Quincy Gems/Tarleton State University) and Kam Smith (Lafayette Aviators/Northern Illinois University) Pitcher and Player of the Week (July 25-July 31), presented by Hodgson Mill.

 

Martin, from Tampa, Fla., pitched in three games for the Gems during the week and did not allow a run over eight innings of work. He walked two, struck out 16 of the 28 batters he faced and earned a 2-0 record for the week.

 

On the season, Martin is 4-1 with a 2.35 ERA. The right-hander has struck out 69 batters in 42 innings and has surrendered just 26 hits. He hasn't allowed an earned run in his last 15 innings.

 

Smith, a native of Colonial Beach, Va., hit .400 (10-for-25) in six games for the Aviators during the week an drove in eight runs. He also hit three doubles and reached once on a walk and three times by being hit by pitches.

 

Heading into Wednesday's Prospect League games, Smith is hitting .354 in 38 games for Lafayette, good enough for fifth in the league. The outfielder ranks second with 17 doubles and has three triples, seven home runs and 33 RBIs on the season.
