The New Market Rebels won their tenth straight game on Tuesday as they handled the Winchester Royals in game one of the semifinals, 9-3, at Rebel Park.
The Rebels wasted no time as they put up four runs in the first inning off of Royals starting pitcher Nick Beardsley. Kobe Lopez kicked off the game with a single, followed by a two-run home run from Andrew Eyster.
Later in the inning with the bases loaded, Adan Fernandez singled to bring across two more runs and give New Market a comfortable four-run lead. Royals catcher Sean Vasquez answered in the second with an RBI single to cut it to a three-run deficit.
In the bottom half of the frame, Eyster laced a two-out double and came around to score off an error to extend the lead to 5-1.
An inning later, with runners on the corners, Christopher De Guzman singled to plate the Rebels’ sixth run. Fernandez, who singled earlier in the inning, came around to score on a wild pitch a couple batters later to open a 7-1 lead.
Beardsley lasted three innings, allowing seven runs (six earned) on seven hits while striking out three. Rebels starter Thomas Packert lasted five innings, allowing one run on three hits with as many strikeouts.
In the sixth, Drake May led off with a single. After stealing second base, Eyster drove him in with an RBI double. Winchester received a couple runs in the eighth from a two-run home run off the bat of Ray Gil, making it an 8-3 game.
Infielder Masen Prososki came on to pitch for the Royals in the eighth and immediately allowed a home run to Eyster (4-for-5, 2 HR, 4 RBI, 3 runs). Chase Sudduth doubled a couple batters later and came around to score off an Andrew Kasiski RBI single to extend New Market’s lead to 10-3.
The Rebels take a 1-0 series lead with the victory, and will travel to Winchester tomorrow and attempt to punch their ticket to the championship. First pitch at Bridgeforth is scheduled for 7 p.m.
