XENIA, Ohio - The Xenia Scouts snapped a 12-game losing streak beating the Cincinnati Steam 3-1 on Thursday night at Grady’s Field. It was the first win for the Scouts since July 8th as Cincinnati dropped its second game in its last three contests.

The Steam (28-11) fall into a first place tie in the GLSCL South Division standings after the Southern Ohio Copperheads (27-10) beat the Irish Hills Leprechauns on the road 11-5.

Cincinnati scored first in the fourth inning taking a 1-0 advantage. Jake Kates (Gulf Coast State College) reached base on an error leading off the inning. After stealing second base, Kates scored on an RBI single by Thomas Bennett (University of Kentucky).

Nick Byrnes (Ohio University/Moeller HS) got the start for the Steam and threw a no-hitter for the first 4 and 1/3 innings. Unfortunately Byrnes ran out of gas and gave up three runs on four hits after losing his no-hot bid.

That was all the scoring that Xenia needed as the Steam bats went cold. The Cincinnati offense could only muster two hits the rest of the game and only generated a total of six for the game.

Joe Cooney (Belmont Abbey/Lakota East HS) pitched well out the bullpen giving up just one hit in 3 and 1/3 inning of relief. Cooney struck out five batters and walked three while holding the Scouts scoreless.

The Steam return to Max McLeary looking to salvage a split in the series with Scouts on Friday night. Alex Franzen (Kentucky Wesleyan/Campbell County HS) will get the start for Cincinnati with the first pitch scheduled for 7:05pm. John Asalon will have the call of the broadcast on www.cincinnatisteam.com.
