FLAT ROCK, MI: When the Grand Lake Mariners got off to a 4-0 lead after a half inning, they had to be feeling at least a little more positive that their season-worst seven-game losing streak would come to an end. Instead, the Lake Erie Monarchs plated four runs in the second to erase the deficit on their way to triumphing, 11-5, in the series opener at Flat Rock Field on Tuesday night.

The Mariners (15-21) have lost 12 of 15 and are now 4-12 in the month of July.

The Monarchs (16-19-1) are now 11-6-1 in July while also improving their record at Flat Rock Field to 6-7 in 2018.

Grand Lake got a sacrifice fly from Tyson Hays and a three-run homer from Jake McCaw in the first off RHP Logan Schmitt to take the early advantage.

Lake Erie countered by scoring four on just a single hit in the second. Casey O’Laughlin and Zach Schwartzenberger put the ball in play, capitalizing on two errors from Mariners first baseman Evan Spry to drive in three of the runs. Alex Lambeau walked with the bases loaded against LHP Josh Currier to force in the other run.

An RBI groundout by Griffin Mazur put the Monarchs ahead for good, 5-4, in the fifth. A Lambeau single scored Schwartzenberger in the sixth off RHP Mackenzie Hicks to round out the damage against Currier.

The Mariners southpaw Josh Currier (1-4) walked a season-worst eight batters while also allowing six runs (three earned) and two hits in five frames of work.

Lake Erie batted around in the seventh, salting the game away by putting five runs on the board. The first seven men of the inning reached, with Casey Slattery drawing a bases-loaded walk to bring in the first run. Schwartzenberger’s two-run knock brought in O’Laughlin and Mazur to make it 9-4. Another Mariners miscue during Will Prater’s at-bat and a double play hit into by Lambeau with the bases loaded brought in the other two scores.

Schmitt (2-2) scattered six hits, four earned runs, and four walks over six stanzas while compiling two strikeouts to earn his second consecutive win. LHP Evan Flohr held Grand Lake at bay over two innings. RHP Kyle Bischoff permitted just one run in the ninth.

Next Up: The Monarchs will complete the season series on Wednesday evening at 7:05 p.m. against the Mariners, hoping to lock up a set victory.
