7/23 Recap: Tomcats Clinch #1 Seed on Regular Season’s Final Day

Riverhead 6, North Fork 1

The Riverhead Tomcats and North Fork Ospreys finished their suspended game from Sunday at Baseball Heaven in Yaphank. Riverhead would win the completed game by a final score of 6-1.

Nick DeSalvo (LIU Brooklyn) pitched four innings to get the win allowing just one run on two hits.

Alex Baratta (Binghamton) had three hits in the game with an RBI in the top of the seventh inning.

 

Riverhead 10, Shelter Island 5

The Riverhead Tomcats would clinch home-field advantage in the HCBL playoffs by winning their regular season finale over the Shelter Island Bucks by a final score of 10-5 at Fiske Field.

The Bucks had a 2-0 lead going into the top of the fifth when the Tomcats rallied for four runs. Connor Echols (Dayton) broke the tie with a two-run homer to put Riverhead up.

Shelter Island would get the lead back in the bottom of the fifth on a three-run shot by Dylan Robertson (St. Mary’s (CA) making the score 5-4 in favor of the Bucks.

In the top of the eighth, Markus Melendez (Mitchell) who was picked up by the Tomcats following the conclusion of the North Fork game earlier in the day hit a leadoff single. Chris Stefl (St. John’s) would step up to the plate with two outs and hit a two-run home run putting Riverhead up by a score of 6-5.

Riverhead would score four runs in the ninth to seal the game. The Rhode Island connection of Xavier Vargas and Matt Daller would provide the Tomcats offense in the ninth with Vargas hitting a two-run triple and Daller hitting his first home run of the season.

Joe Murphy (NYIT) got the win with Beau Keathley (Oakland) getting the last five outs to earn his fourth save of the season.

It’s the first time in the Tomcats franchise history that they will be the top seed in the HCBL playoffs. Riverhead will host Game 1 of the HCBL semifinals against the winner of Wednesday’s HCBL Wild Card between the Bucks and Sag Harbor Whalers at Sgt. Jonathan Keller Field.

The Bucks will host the Whalers at Fiske Field in the HCBL Wild Card having earned the #4 seed in the playoffs.

 

Long Island 13, Southampton 2 (8 Innings)

The Long Island Road Warriors won their 25th game of the season defeating the Southampton Breakers by a final score of 13-2 in eight innings at Southampton High School on Monday.

Marcos Perviolaris (SUNY Cortland) went 2-for-4 with a home run, three RBI and three runs scored for the Road Warriors.

Matthew Stepnoski (Wilmington) had a home run in the Long Island victory hitting a two-run shot in the top of the eighth.

Joe Valentino (LIU Post) pitched five innings of shutout ball only allowing three hits to get his second win of the season.

The Road Warriors will finish at 25-15 as the #2 seed in the HCBL playoffs and will host the third-seeded Westhampton Aviators in Game 1 of the HCBL Semifinals at Southampton High School. The start time for Game 1 will be Thursday at 4 PM.

 

Sag Harbor 8, Westhampton 8

The Sag Harbor Whalers and Westhampton Aviators played to an 8-8 tie at Aviator Field on Monday in both teams’ regular season finale.

The Whalers started the game on the first pitch with a solo home run off the bat of shortstop Jace Mercer (Cincinnati) to lead 1-0.

Westhampton would score two runs in the bottom of the first on a steal of home and an RBI single from Tristan Welch (LSU Eunice). The Aviators would score four runs in the bottom of the fourth with the big blast coming from Ethan Hajdukovic (Western Michigan) who hit a two-run homer onto the basketball court at Aviator Field.

Sam Cachola (California) would get a run for the Whalers in the top of the fifth while the Aviators got a two-run double from David Hogarth (William & Mary) to take an 8-2 lead.

Sag Harbor would chip away at the Aviator lead inning by inning get a run in the fifth and sixth innings along with a pair of runs in the seventh to get within two.

Joe Suozzi (Boston College) hit a solo home run in the top of the eighth as the Whalers were now just one run behind Westhampton. A sacrifice fly by Mercer in the top of the ninth would tie the score at 8-8.

Chase Borowitz (Binghamton) held the Aviators scoreless in the ninth as the umpires declared the end of the game due to darkness.

Westhampton finishes the 2018 regular season at 20-19-1 with 41 points and will be the #3 seed in the HCBL playoffs playing the #2 seeded Long Island Road Warriors in the HCBL Semifinals starting Thursday at Southampton High School for Game 1.

Sag Harbor finishes the year with a record of 17-18-5 with 39 points and will be the #5 seed in the postseason. The Whalers will travel to Shelter Island to play the Bucks in the first ever HCBL Wild Card on Wednesday in a single elimination game with the winner to play Riverhead in the Semifinals on Thursday.
