WINTER GARDEN, Fla (July 22, 2018) – Winter Garden went 2-1 against the Seminole County Scorpions this past week, but lost to the Leesburg Lightning after they only put two runs up on Saturday night.

Before the Squeeze took the field on Wednesday, four players represented Winter Garden in North Carolina in the Southeast Collegiate Prospect Showcase on Monday and Tuesday - Aaron Anderson (Flagler), Adams Torres (UCF), Michael Cullen (Chipola), and Sadler Goodwin (Troy).

Winter Garden took game one of a three game series on Wednesday vs. Seminole County after a two run homer from Goodwin and a six strikeout outing for pitcher Chase Pilato (Florida Southern) helped push the Squeeze ahead.

The script was flipped come Thursday, after a long 10-inning game resulted in the Squeeze coming up short by one in the 10th inning.

The bottom of the third was Winter Garden’s most successful outing, after Anderson was brought home after a quick single from Torres, which made the score 4-2 with only one out. Adams advanced to second after a sacrifice fly, and was joined on base after Goodwin was hit by a pitch which sent him to first. With two outs and a 2-1 count, Luke Reidy (Rollins) hit a nuke past left field; which scored three for the Squeeze and they took the lead; 5-3 headed into the fourth.

When it came close to the end of the game, Winter Garden decided they weren’t finished yet; they scored one run in the bottom of the ninth that started after a double from Reeder Smith (Troy), which eventually sent him home after a single from Torres and Nathan Schreckegost (Landers). With the game tied at 8’s, the Squeeze and the Scorpions were sent into an extra tenth inning; where the Scorpions were able to score two runs and the Squeeze only scored one, which resulted in a hard-fought 10-9 loss.

The Series was tied 1-1 as Winter Garden took the road to Sanford for game three; where the Squeeze was able to score nine runs in the top of the ninth inning after the Scorpions walked three in a row.

Winter Garden pulled it off with only ONE out to spare.

Ryan Ashworth (Flagler) had himself a night, with a total of eight innings pitched and only two runs allowed. While Goodwin closed in the bottom of the ninth, Ashworth wasn’t ready to leave the field yet, so head coach Jay Welsh let the Squeeze have some fun and moved the pitcher to third base while Goodwin pitched. With only one out left to finish the game, the new third baseman made the final out of the game and threw the batter out at first.

“I was just up there having fun and enjoying one of my last outings for coach Welsh and it was definitely a plus playing third and getting the last out of the game” Ashworth stated.

The final score was 12-3.

Saturday wasn’t as eventful as Friday had been. The Squeeze only put two hits up, and were unable to score the entirety of the game while the Lightning scored three runs. Tyler Fagler (Dartmouth) pitched the last eight innings, and only allowed one run with six strikeouts, but with Torres and Anderson being the only two Squeeze players to earn a hit, it wasn’t enough to walk out with a win. The Lightning took the win, 3-0.
