WHITE RIVER JUNCTION, VT. — The Upper Valley Nighthawks were first to strike offensively, but the Sanford Mainers emerged with a 2-1 victory over the Northern Division-rival at Goodall Park on Thursday night.
The Nighthawks put a run on the scoreboard in the top of the second inning when Riley Smith (University of Minnesota) drove in Anthony Meduri (Binghamton University) on a sacrifice fly to left-field.
Sanford’s Austin Biggar tied the game in the bottom of the 3rd inning with an RBI single to score John Rizer from second base.
Randall Bednar’s solo homer to lead off the bottom of the 4th inning was the go-ahead run that the Mainers needed to guide them to victory.
Following the defeat, the Nighthawks fall to 18-16 and sit 4th place in the NECBL Northern Division. The Mainers advance to 19-13 and rank 2nd among the North.
Upper Valley starter Brian Weissert (Fordham University) pitched 2.1 innings, surrendering one run on two hits, and striking out six. David Sampson (Plymouth State University) pitched 1.2 innings in relief, giving up one hit, one run, and striking out a pair of Mainers. Stephen Hansen (Iona College) pitched three innings of one-hit baseball before Jack Ipsen (Bryant University) closed out the evening on the hill for the Nighthawks.
Upper Valley will return to action tomorrow at 6:30 p.m. as they travel to North Adams for a 6:30 P.M. contest with the SteepleCats at Joe Wolfe Field. Matt Stewart will have all of the action covered on the NECBL Broadcast Network.
