7/17 Recap: Tomcats Jump to First Place

Riverhead 10, Southampton 0 (7 Innings)

The Riverhead Tomcats took over first place in the HCBL standings with a 10-0 win over the Southampton Breakers on Tuesday. The Tomcats have now won nine of their last twelve games dating back to July 3rd.

Alex Baratta (Binghamton) went 3-for-5 for Riverhead with three RBI. Louis Antos (Queens) extended his hitting streak to ten games as he had a pair of hits raising his batting average on the season to .435.

Tyler Henry (Dayton) pitched five innings of shutout ball only allowing four hits. The victory was Henry’s third of the season.

Riverhead also became the first team to clinch a playoff spot in the HCBL this season with the win.

 

North Fork 3, Sag Harbor 3 (6 Innings)

The North Fork Ospreys and Sag Harbor Whalers played to a 3-3 six-inning tie due to rain at Mashashimuet Park in Sag Harbor.

The Ospreys scored three runs in the top of the third. Tyrese Clayborne (Lamar) and Matt Almonte (Pace) drove in the first runs of the game on back-to-back RBI double. Joe Mercadante (LIU Brooklyn) would later in the inning hit an RBI single to make the score 3-0.

Sag Harbor scored two runs in the bottom of the third on an RBI fielder’s choice from Nick Thornquist (UT San Antonio) and a Jason Allbery (Creighton) RBI single.

The Whalers would tie the game in the bottom of the fifth on a wild pitch that scored Joe Suozzi (Boston College).

North Fork (14-17-4) currently holds a two-point lead over sixth-place Shelter Island for the fifth and final playoff spot in the HCBL. Sag Harbor (17-14-4) is currently tied with Westhampton for third place.
